Usually, the metal area when most water pumps are bolted too are cleaned with a scraper of some kind and old gasket matter is removed. That surface should be cleaned, flat, and free of irregularity. Most mechanics, if they use any kind of stickum - like contact cement from a tube, or the costlier, but not-needed specialty sealers, is applied to the pump surface so the gasket stays put and not move when installing the bolts. The glue does not do any actual sealing, just the fiber gasket will. None needs to be applied to the engine side that you scraped clean. Make sense to you? It's probably a good idea to service the cooling system with a non-caustic flush cleaner before hand -since all the coolant will come out during the change. Then add a additive that neutralizes acids with the new anti-freeze.

And I went to another two mechanics. They said the previous one who replaced the water pump did something wrong to timing chain. But that mechanics didn't admit it. What can I do?: You're on thin ice with this, unless you had the timing belt replaced before 90,000 miles. That big noise was the pistons hitting the valves after the timing belt slipped, or more likely, broke from being worn out. When the engine's water pump is driven by the timing belt, the belt must be slacked to get the pump off, then tightened back up after the new pump installation. That old belt couldn't hold up under the tension. It's just bad luck for the mechanic he didn't think to question the age of the timing belt and insist that it be replaced. Of course that would cost a bit more. It will be an uphill battle. You might as well find a used engine if you want this car back on the road. Good luck to you.

Q:I have a '97 Grand Prix with a 3800 V-6. There is a single bolt on the left side of the water pump that is directly behind the power steering pump pulley. How do you get the PS pump pulley off? I pulled a tricep trying to get this thing loose, and I'm no further now than when I started on it. Can anybody give me a tip on removing the pulley or the whole PS pump? I have a brand new water pump that I can't get on because of this fine piece of design by the brilliant engineers at GM!: here is a step by step on how to re move the pump is a lot easier than tring to pull off the pulley plus it will not come off when it on the engine there is no room for thr puller.

Q:Would I notice a difference in driving if I changed my timing belt and water pump?: The water pump helps with the cooling of your engine while it is running and your timing belt keeps the valves opening at the right time. If your timing is off you will ruin your engine and bend your valves. Changing it should help improve performance as long as it is done right.
