- Q: we need to know how an electrical wire is measured. When you say for example a stranded tw wire 2mm2 does it mean 2mm square or 2 square mm meaning the area of the wire? does the measurement or size indicated in the insulation includes the insulation itself when measuring the wire? how about a stranded wire? basically the question is please explain the size of thw or tw wire stranded or solid wire indicated on the insulation. And how it is measured. does the insulation included in the measurement or just the copper wire inside that is measured.
- strandings of the wires equal a gauge. ex: 7strands of 30gauge wire equals 22 gauge. gauge is a size of either a solid wire or smaller stranded wires to equal that size
- Q: When I cross the black wire and ground I get a spark. Isnthis normal?
- You should be tripping the breaker when you cross the two, If not, then something is wrong with the breaker. The black is always hot, this isn't a car. Actually, any colored wire is hot except for the white and the green. So in a big house with emt conduit or a commercial job, any colored wire is hot. A 3 way switch with a 3rd leg traveler that is not marked can carry a load, I got knocked off the ladder the other day by one, some idiot connected the traveler to the white, I got zapped big time. I hate when they do that.
- Q: I have looked up wires for this car but the ones that I have looked up tell me i should have different colored wires. These are the wire colors i have:yellowyellow/blackorangepurple/whitewhiteblue/redgreen/blackpink/blackred/blackblue/orangeyellow/redwhite/redgreen/orangePlease Please Please help me!Thanks,Ash
- The wire coloring (wiring diagram) for my friends 1997 Mazda Protege LX was as follows: Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Blue/Red Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Pink/Black Car Radio Ground Wire: Black/Yellow Left Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Blue/Orange Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Violet/White Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): White/Red Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Yellow/Red Left Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Orange Left Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Yellow Right Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Green/Black Right Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Green/Orange
- Q: I have two low voltage wires that run from one side of a building to another. The insulation on both wires is the same color. I eventually just walked an additional wire around the building and checked continuity. Is there an easier way to differentiate between the two wires?
- 1. At one side of the building mark the two wires. 2. Connect a battery to the two ends noting which is positive. 3. Go to the other side of the building and use your voltmeter to determine which wire end is positive. Mark that one the sameas you did the other end of the positive wire.
- Q: i need to make a battery powered light bulb and i have copper wire at home...will it work?
- You must use insulated wire.
- Q: What are the types of Barbed wires?
- Barbed wire is a sharp, twisted form of wire which is used mainly for protection and containment. Barbed wire is twisted at various stages to create sharp points which can create an instant injury if scaled. There are several different types of barbed wire. Classic Classic barbed wire is also the cheapest available. It is made of either steel or aluminum. The wire is twisted at sequential stages to create sharp points. Classic barbed wire will be used to keep animals in a specific area or to keep people away from a protected area. Razor Wire Razor barbed wire is used to line the walls of prisons and containment facilities. This wire is made by cutting large strips of aluminum with a sharp triangular blade on each side of the wire strip. These blades are extremely sharp. They are intended to cause much greater injury than a piece of classic barbed wire. Razor wire is often used to protect business premises from intruders. Spiral Spiral barbed wire is formed with a sharp blade running parallel to a piece of normal steel. This is then twisted into a spiral shape to create a long and continuous sharp edge to the wire. Spiral wire is often used for army exercises and for other containment or protection purposes. I hope this quite help u... thank u. :-)
- Q: I just tore my old shed down, that was wired for electrical. though I never used power out there There is size 10 wiring (two wires), running from the house to where my shed was. I then bought a Tough Shed from The Home Depot and put it where my old shed was. While working on wiring my new shed for electricity, I turned power off to the entire house.I am trying to install power to the shed and I spliced the size 10 wires to size 14 (three cable, includes a ground) which I have connect to an electrical outlet in the shed, but once I turn the main power box back on, the circuit that runs power to the shed keeps tripping off. Am I missing something here? Thanks
- Open the splices and leave the size 10 wires unattached with wire nuts over them. Try to power up the wires when they are disconnected. If it doesn't trip, you must have reversed your wiring. If it trips, the wires are shorted to ground. Perhaps the wires are rotted out under ground or grounded by a sharp metal edge. The shed curcuit breaker should be changed to a 15 amp if you will splice to 14 gauge. Or: There should be a breaker box like there was in the old shed, with 15 amp breakers for for 14 wire. 20 amp for # 12 wire.
- Q: We are replacing an older style submersible 3 wire well pump with a newer style 3 wire plus ground. I do not know where to ground the green wire? Is it necessary to extend the wire from the pump all the way to the top and ground it there or can i just ground it to the pump itself? Any ideas? First time home owner... trying to save money and not call an electrician (Im an avionics technician so I have some what of an idea what im doing.) Thanks
- All wires coming from the pump should terminated in the Pressure Switch box. Take the green wire from the pump and the ground wire from the house, connect them together with a pigtail wire and attach the pigtail wire to the ground screw within the Pressure Switch box.
- Q: I've been meaning to find floral wire for a DIY project I'm going to attempt. Does anyone know where to buy floral wire? I'm not sure if Michael's sells it. Please let me know from personal experiences.

- Q: My home is wired for the thermostats with two wires (red and white). I have acquired a new thermostat that requires a Red, White, and Common wire. Using the white wire in that position will power the unit up but it won't trigger the heat. Is there something that can be put in line that will allow this thermostat to work without rewiring the house?
- T-stat wires are usually left loose in the wall, no staples, so you can easily replace it by pulling a new wire through with the old one. First try to get an idea of where the wire goes. Get an estimate of total length and go to home depot and purchase 18-3 t-stat wire. They sell it in 25 feet, 50 feet, 100 feet, 500 feet, or by the foot. Compare prices and get enough to make a continuous run. Older 2 wire Tstats used a mercury or spring switch to simply connect the two wires together (24v + and sl return). Your new Tstat needs a common because it is being powered by the same feed that activates the unit. (So you have 24+ 24- and sl return) When you attach your new wire to your old wire be sure to actually strip the outer coating of about 4 inches or so and fold the wires around each other to get a good strong bond, and then tape it tight to keep it as small diameter as possible.
