- Q: When it is time to replace wiring in a building?
- Some places require a re-wiring of a home if you replace the main service panel and the wiring is old, such as post and wrap or two conductor. In general, unless you have very old wiring, have had a fire, or need to upgrade your power availability in a room, you will not need to replace the wire. And my advice, if you have ANY post and wrap, or cloth insulated two-wire, get it replaced. That stuff is a fire hazard, as the rubber and cloth in those kinds of wires breaks down after decades, and can allow arcing to occur. Which can lead to a house fire.

- Get a length of wire the same gauge or larger than the original wire. Solder the wire to the old wire and run it to a good ground. If you can't get it soldered a crimp connector will work,but not a good idea under the hood of a car, temporary at best

- Q: I have this ipod cord in my car to play music off of, and at first it started cutting out. I would move the wire in a specific spot to a position to where it would work. Then eventually it just stopped working all together, so im assuming the wires inside have been damaged. - The wires in those little patch cords and headphones and stuff are often very fine and hard to splice or solder. You could get you some wire cutters and wire strippers and a soldering iron and some electrical tape or shrink wrap and go at it, but it would probably be just as well to get another cord.

- You shouldn't need to replace the wires, only splice them back together, color to like color. If you decide to replace them, they are 18 gauge. Depending on the unit that you have, there may be 2, 3, 5, 7, or 9 wires. Install the wire in 3/8 flex to prevent a repeat. Lowes and Home Depot will sell you the wire by the lenght you need. Ask for jacketed wire.

- If you don't have a multimeter, you can probably see the effect of resistance with a flashlight bulb and a small battery (AA or AAA, etc). Get a spool of wire, needs to be coated/insulated wire. Connect the bulb to the battery with the shortest wire possible. See how bright the bulb is. Then, connect again using the entire spool of wire (hopefully you can get at both ends of the wire while it is still on the spool). The bulb will be dimmer because the voltage at the bulb will be reduced by the resistance of the wire (resistivity per unit length X the length of wire). If the length of wire on the spool is too long, the bulb will not light up at all.
