Q: I have a 98 Jetta GL and my left rear shock absorber has begun leaking fluid in the past month or so. I have also had issues with the bearings wearing out, so I had them replaced less than 2000 miles ago. But now these newly installed ones are giving me the telltale signs of going-to-crush-soon. Could a failing shock absorber cause uneven wear/premature failure of my rear wheel bearings? I know that the bearings were installed packed correctly.Also, on the hub assembly the nut that goes on just before putting in the cotter pin tends to loosen after about 50 miles of driving. I continue to tighten it, then back it off slightly but the problem still occurs. This occurs on BOTH rear wheels. I am at a loss for what can cause this. Help!Thanks!
HI no shocks don't cause ware on bearings... did you get the ring back on the goes over the nut that you install the cotter pin Thu? That holds he nut from turning and backing out.. good luck tim
Q: My husband has a dodge 3500 extended van that he uses for work. He is a floor installer, so he carries carpet, laminate, tile, and his tools in the van daily. We bought the van just over a year ago. He has put just under 40,000 miles on it (it has a totol of 211,000), and he is now on his 3rd set of bearings on the front. The van was upgraded by adding an extra leaf to the suspension on each side by the previous owner. It is a good sturdy van. The body is in almost perfect condition and it runs great, but it seems like we are always having to replace something for the front end. Is this a common problem, or could it be because of how it was modified? Is it that the front end is taking too much of the stess of the road and the load of whatever he's carrying that day? He just replaced the bearings 3 months ago, and now they are going bad again. (and that seems to be the trend, every 3-4 months they go bad)I was just wondering.Thanks
Use a bearing packer that you can hook to a grease gun, don't use the old hand method. Also make sure you are using grease suitable for disc brakes, this type of grease can withstand much higher temps without running out of the bearings. I use synthetic grease in my wheel bearings. Try it like this one time and see how it goes.

Bones Reds try and get ceramic bearings keep maintenance on them every month and don't worry about ABEC ratings cause it counts for nothing and you will have bearings for at least a year or two depending on where and how you skate.

You rarely replace just the bearings because usually the crank is damaged or worn as well, and the entire crank kit should be installed. You are talking like .0002 clearance there. Well, it's a ford so give or take an inch or so should be like new. Kidding. Almost.
Q: can i make my own ball bearings for hubs, bottom bracket, etc. from a ceramic mug or the like? if its possible, what tools do i need? can i get it done at a machine shop? i would only do this if its cheaper than buying them pre-made, which in case you didnt know, can cost several hundred dollars for a full set.
It would be very dificult and you would need a lot of very expensive equipment. Heat treating, grinding, lapping. Try OKorder thats a good place to maybe save quit a bit on things like this. If your only wanting the balls you can get them in quantities from MSC. I believe they sell steel balls that aren't quit good enought for percision bearings. I got 50 for just a few dollars once.

Assuming you are looking for not only ceramic balls, but inner and outer races as well. These bearings will run around $240 a set. Most bearings that called ceramic only use ceramic balls, but the races are still steel. Some cheaper 'ceramic' bearings only use a ceramic coating on the balls. You might want to think about stainless steel bearings. They are very resistant to corrosion and cost much less than full ceramic bearings, and only a little more than regular steel. SS Bearings with ceramic balls cost about double that of all SS bearings.
