- Fred, You should never soak any type of bearing sealed or otherwise in gasoline. Bearings and their races are very hard. Without some kind of lubrication they would be ruined in minutes. For you're skateboard the hot ticket for ultimate speed would be an aerosol spray can with suspended Teflon. You must repeat this after a day's use. It's still available although a bit hard to find. I recently found some on line. Just type in: Teflon spray. The next best item for load carrying bearings would be lithium spray grease. It may not be as fast but ambient temperature doesn't thicken this type of lube. It also would give you more protection over a longer period of weeks.

- What ever you do please don't try to change them yourself. Special tools are needed (press sleeves) and a press to do the job! A Toyota dealer will have an ultrasonic listening device which will tell you which bearings are bad. You, more than likely will not feel anything loose when the wheels are off the ground. Locally, NAPA will have SKF American made bearings. Carquest has Timken wheel bearings.

- Q: 2005 Sport Trac, 2WD, automatic trans w/ aprox 80K milesA few months ago there was a grinding sound from the rear of the truck that increased with speed (a whomb, whomb, whomb type sound) and even a clicking when I reversed. - Sounds like outer wheel bearings but it could be the differential bearings as well. The only way to know is replace the wheel bearings and see if the noise stops. I'd check the gear oil level as well since if you were low on oil that would kill the bearings and the differential. If it's low make sure you add the specific kind for your axle.

- soaking them in wd40 isnt going to do too much. if you want to do it right it will take a little bit more time. first use a thumb tack to take the C-clip out and then remove the shield next put them in a container(something that you can close and shake) of alcohol. then shake vigorously finally pack the bearings with white grease or some sort of grease and put the shields and C-clips back on.
