- Q: I moved into a home with pre-wired speakers. There is a bundle of speaker wire coming out of the wall. Each wire has 4 colors of other wire coming out of it. There are a total of 7 main wires (with four wires each) and a total of 9 speakers.
- i had a cable like that, 4 wire but two clamps on speaker. what i did was have the red and black wire.. and then just connect another wire to that, making sure you connect the same wire on both ends.. eg: red with green and black with blue... color varies.. but you get the point..
- Q: Is it okay to solder wrapping wire to a mother board, I am just asking because the wires are called WRAPPING.
- Soldering is fine. As with any wire, be sure to tin the wire first (give it its own thin coat of solder before attempting to solder it to anything else) and secure the wire mechanically so that the solder joint isn't subjected to vibration or other stress. A blob of glue will do the job.
- Q: I was re-wiring a light switch and a fan control knob and I accidentally cut a wire too short. This wire comes out the front of the fan dial and goes around to the back, connecting to another wire, thus placing a wire nut impossible. Can I just link the two ends together, then seal it with electrical tape? Or do I have to buy a new fan dial (which will cost $25, a cost I'm trying to avoid)? Will just the tape be safe enough?
- You should definitely use wire nuts but your fan dial is totally savable. Just use two wire nuts with a short piece of wire in between the short ends you have. Wire nuts are important because you need to clamp the wires together to get a good amount of conductivity. If you just taped the wires together they would touch but not well enough to make a good low resistance union. Bad connections are high resistance and cause heat and then fires.
- Q: just need a little help to make right.just wiring an outlet from building to breaker box outside.. which way is the right way to wire it to a breaker then the box. Got the right breaker. Thanks
- in case you are able to desire to ask this question you don't comprehend adequate to do it suitable. Get an electrician to do it. you will the two electrocute your self or burn your place down in case you do it.
- Q: I just read an article about a man who was electrocuted by a live overhead wire while trimming a tree. Horrible. My question is I see squirrels running on all the overhead wires. How do they not get electrocuted?
- Electrocution happens when electricity finds a way to ground. Squirrels are not grounded so they don't get shocked. Ever watch the Discovery channel? They've shown how the power company works on high voltage lines without shutting the power off. A helicopter hovers next to the power line while a technician reaches out to the power line with a probe. Once contacted the helicopter and the technician are at the same potential voltage so nobody gets shocked. However, during approach they are NOT at the same potential. That's the reason for making contact with he wire with a probe first. So that the technician doesn't take a big hit when he first touches the live wire. So squirrels, birds, rats - anything that can land on the wires doesn't get electrocuted. But if an animal touches the wire AND ground (or another wire), it's all over in a blinding flash. Hope this helps. 'av'a g'day mate. '')
- Q: I m wondering if there s a Neutral Wire in this picture (yes I turned off the breaker to get this photo). I want to put in a quot;Smart Light Switchand they require a Neutral Wire. I ll have an electrician do the work, but want to make sure the wire exists first.
- It's hard to tell from the switch and the color of the wires, but you also have an outlet in the same box as the switch. The outlet will have a neutral and, if it's on the same circuit, you should be able to use that.
- Q: I'm trying to install a ceiling fan but I'm having trouble with the wiring. Coming out of the fan I've got a black, white, black and white striped, and a green wire. coming out of the cieling i've got a black, a white and a red wire. The fan's green wire is connected to the bracket as a ground, so that's out of the way. It's the other wires that confuse me. I've tried, white to white, black to black, and BW striped to red, but that didn't do anything.Any ideas? Thanks.
- Be careful when with just hooking Black to Black or White to White as has been suggested. In some configurations the white wire is part of the switch leg and is not nuetral. Being that this is a 50 year old house, the Hot wire from the breaker box could very possibly be coming in at the light box instead of the switch box which would mean that there is a wire that is using both the Black and the White wires for power. One of them is taking power to the switch and the other is bringing power back to the light from the switch when the switch is turned on. In this scenario, the white wire would not be nuetral!!! The brown wire was typicallly used for hot up into the 70's and then they changed it to black. Your best bet is to hook it up exactly the way you took it off and hook the Blue and Black wire from your fan to the same wire. I assume that this fan has pull chain controls for both the light and the fan?.....
- Q: Im installing a motion sensor which comes with 3 wires, red black and white and want to connect it to a indoor light that only comes with 2 wires white and black. How do I go about installing them and powering them?
- To be honest, it seems you might be better served getting an electrician. If not... 1st, make sure to turn off the power. I'd imagine the red and black wires are for the incoming power (to the motion switch) and the outgoing power (from the motion sensor to the light). Look for markings on the wires or near where they go into the sensor (didn't this sensor come with instructions?), LINE designates incoming power, LOAD is for the load being served (the light). White is the common wire and will connect to the other white wire. If I had to guess, I'd say the red is incoming power, black is outgoing to the light. Whatever you do, BE CAREFUL, electricity is no joke.
- Q: Is lime wire any good????
- My friend has it and she loves it. Sometimes, though, the songs come out funny because the people who upload them change them in some way. But other than that I've only heard good things about it. Just don't get caught ;)
