Q: My renter took apart a timer that was hooked to a ceiling fan because the timer was clicking loudly.Now, I just want to simply install a normal on/off switch in it's place. There are two sets of wires coming into the box. One set has a red,white, and black wire coming from it. The other set has just a white and black wire coming into the box. I'm sure this is relatively simple for someone who has wiring expertise. How do I wire a normal light switch to these wires?!?!: The set of black and white wires are coming from your breaker box (supply). The Black, white and red wires are leading to your ceiling fan (demand). This next part depends on how your fan is wired up. You will want to check first. USUALLY, the red wire controls the fan only, while the black wire supplies power to the light kit, but it could be reversed. This is the part that you want to check. The red wire may also be capped off in the ceiling box and only exists if the user wants separate fan/light control in the future. Assuming that the red wire is capped off: 1.) Turn off the breaker supplying the circuit you are working on. 2.) Use a wire nut to twist the white wires together. 3.) Use a second wire nut to cap off the red wire. 4.) Wrap the black [supply] wire clockwise around the bottom screw on your new switch and tighten.. 5.) Wrap the black [demand] wire clockwise around the top screw on your new switch and tighten. 6.) Attach the new switch to the wall box while carefully tucking the wires in behind the switch. 7.) Install cover plate. 8.) Restore power to the circuit. It IS possible that the person who installed the ceiling fan used the red wire as the hot instead of the black. If this is the case, you can either rewire the ceiling fan's box accordingly (disconnecting the red wire and using the black instead) or substituting red instead of black in the instructions above. The red wire would then connect to the top screw terminal of your switch. If the red is connected to the light kit (if applicable) and the black is connected to the motor (or vise versa), disconnect the light kit and wire it along with the motor.

If the wire was thin, not as many electrons go through it. But a bigger wire means the electrons flow faster and the overall system receives and gives off energy faster.

The hot wire is red plastic coated and looks modern to me.: you've got some good answers so far. if the wire turns out to be aluminum then proceed with caution because aluminum wire in small sizes turned out to be a terrible idea. it will need a special receptacle. if the wire is bx wire as described in your first comment don't bother with those greenies he mentioned because simply screwing your device into the metal box will bond the ground together. it uses the 6/32 screws provided as an excellent grounding means. you may want to consider using GFCI receptacles as well. I've never seen a new hot wire and old neutral wire like you describe and I've worked on a lot of older houses. before you get into trying to rewire your house realize that this is a very time consuming and aggravating project that will require two people who really should have experience doing this. if you do it then invest in a long (like 4 foot) drill bit and some glow sticks.

Q: home, thermostat, wiring: green wire is 24 volts from the t-stat to the indoor fan relay, i promise! unless it's a trane. trane has their own wiring codes and i don't remember trane wiring at this time. i can look it up but don't want to. green goes to the indoor fan relay, for real. the fan relay energizes 110 volts and turns the indoor fan on. be careful jacking around with that stuff. remember, you have low voltage from the transformer and t-stat and high voltage everywhere else. the outside stuff is 220 volts. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ!
