- Q: do i need a different wire for in-wall speakers or a regular speaker wire
- If you are installing in-wall wire, look for wire with CL3 or in-wall insulation. The wire is not the issue, but the CL3 means the plastic insulation around the wire is fire-resistant and wont act like a fuse to spread a fire. Many fire codes require this. Some of the Carol brand from Home Depot is CL3 rated or buy a spool of 12 ga from PartsExpress.
- Q: Hi,I'm looking to change the outlets and the switch and light fixture in a bedroom of a home built in 1948. The outlets are original to the home I think. Will I have to fish ground wire throught to the panel box for my new receptacles? Or just install new 2 slot outlets?Why the different looking wires?Is the older wire copper with a silver colored coating to indicate being neutral or is this an old aluminum wire? The hot wire is red plastic coated and looks modern to me.
- In '48 your house won't have a ground wire as you found out. If it is wired with BX cable ( metal clad) you can see in the basement or crawl space, the ground is actually taken to the outlet by the metallic casing. Then all you would have to do is get a bag of ground wires with screws already crimped on them at Home Depot called Greenies. You screw them into one of the holes inside the box and attach the other end to the ground screw on the switch or outlet. The red casing you are describing actually sounds like red electrical tape wrapped around deteriorating wire in the box as the other wire looks raggy. The wire you see that looks aluminum MAY be aluminum someone added in the '70's when al wire was used, but BOTH would be replaced and there would have been a ground wire. I don't know why it looks silver, but I have seen old wiring like that and it is usually copper. If you see the BX cable you are good adding the ground wire, if it is a silvery looking cloth casing, then install new NON-grounded receptacles.
- Q: Question about the 3.5mm cable, I cut it open and there are 4 individual wires inside of it. I've only ever seen 2 wires and a loose one. Which ones are right/left and would the other 2 both be ground?The colors are red/green/white/black. I'm assuming the red/white are right left like normal? But I'm not too sure.
- General audio wire color standards: White/Black are ground. Red is Right+ and Green is left+. There are separate wires needed for headphones, and often the ground wire breaks causing the wire to otherwise completely fail. Mono is left only (the tip) + Ground. The wire can usually be replaced with standard 4 wire phone (16-18 Ga) cable, when used for headphone (low power) applications.

- You must not use 20 Amps for a regular wall plug, it will burn! there is no such thing as 20 A duplex plug, they only come in simplex! If the cable has only a black and red wire it is usually for 220V applications! Sometimes you will find a 3 conductor cable in a kitchen plug, black, red and white wire. This is for a dual circuit outlet. The top plug has a different circuit breaker than the lower plug. As the others have answered, check your local code! Check with your insurance company, because they may effectively void the coverage! It is best to get help from someone qualified.

- No the problem is the black is a constant hot intended for a ceiling fan motor connection. #1) Bare and green are grounds only and no other wire should be attached to them. #2) The red should have been from the switch intended for a light fixture or kit. But it must not be attached to the wall switch or you would have tripped the breaker. I take it there wasn't a light there to start with? Are there any other wires in the ceiling box you didn't mention? If so please edit your question with more detail.
