- Q: Details: The house is a 3 story house. When showering on the 2nd or 3rd floor, the living room ceiling leaked. Not just 1-2 drops but we had to get a bucket and you can see the staining on the ceiling. This was 4-5 years ago and we stopped using these showers. No further leaking when NOT using the showers. The contractor opened the ceiling today near the staining and turned on the showers. He said that there was no leaking. What happened? Any suggestions? Thanks.
- Could you see any pipes in he ceiling, drain pipes or hot and cold water pipes? I doubt if the pipes fixed them selves and if you start using these showers again, it will start leaking again. Most likely the pipe or pipes have calcium deposit that have temporarily sealed the leak. I would leave the ceiling open for a week and use those showers every day to see if they start leaking again. - Q: I'm trying to hang something heavy from my ceiling and I can't find a joist through the drywall. I've tried using a studfinder, and I can't really get into the attic area because it's insulated with loose fiberglass. Can anyone help?
- do not worry about your stud finder they do nto work on ceilings, if you have a high hat light or cieling fan they are off of those and you can take out the light and look with a mirror, or measure of however depending on when and how your house was built the beams could be either 16,18, or 24 inches apart. the best way is to make a small hole in the corner and use a hanger to feel around when you find the first bean and the way they are running then you will know how far apart they are spaced and where they will be for your needs, if that doesn't work then cut a slightly bigger hole and use a mirror and flashlight and find the beams that way...i do this sevel times a week good luck

If the joists are unobstructed by solid braces, there are insulators who bore a hole in each end between joists and pump in a foam type insulation. I have seen this done to outside walls on a house before putting on siding.

- I know this was posted awhile ago, but I thought this info I got from an expert may be helpful. If your house is built before 1978 it may have asbestos. To remove popcorn ceilings before this date the cheap way is to layer plastic everywhere in the area of the popcorn ceiling use a spray bottle or mister keeping it wet then scrape it off. When finished gather the plastic up keeping the popcorn ceiling remains encased in the plastic put it in a large garbage bag, seal up, and toss it. The key is to keep it wet when removing. For extra precaution wear safety glasses and mask. As long as it's wet it can't be inhaled and that's when it's dangerous. If you think it may be in the walls it's a good idea to get your home tested for the professionals to come in to clean it but it will cost you a lot of money.
