- Q: I had my house re roofed last year and the roof leaked into a large utility room. I took the drop ceiling out and took down the ceiling panels above it and now I have to replace the insulation and put a ceiling back in. Its a very high celing unless I replace the drop ceiling panels here. Any suggestions? What kind of insulation should I use? I noticed some of the insulation has different numbers and some of it is very expensive so how do I know what to use?
- The numbers associated with it are called R Value. As a rule of thumb, the higher R Value numbers, the better. For example, fiberglass has about R 3 per inch (least expensive) and rigid foam has about an R 6 per inch (most expensive). If you have plenty of space to work with, you could do 10 inches of fiberglass (or a similar mineral fiber type insulation) and get the same results as if you used 5 inches of foam. It just depends on your situation. If you are in a very cold climate, I would suggest insulating to an R 49. If you are in a very hot climate, I would suggest insulating to an R 19 with a radiant barrier (more efficient than R 30 in warm, sunny climates). If you are in a moderate climate, you could be anywhere in the middle.
- Q: I have a large attic with sloped ceiling which are covered with rolls of fiberglass insulation. I use my attic for storage and am up there frequently, and for long periods of time. I would like ideas on what material could be used to cover the exposed insulation, so that I'm not breathing in the fiberglass.Cost and easy installation is a factor. I do not want to put up drywall or any type of regular ceiling, because if there's ever a leak, I want to be able to access it easily. Some sort of lightweight material that comes in a roll that I would be able to install with a staple gun would be great - but not plastic, because I don't want to worry about condensation and mold building up in the hot summertime. All ideas are welcome, and if you know the price of the material you're suggesting, please include it in your answer. Thanks everybody!
- Sounds like it's in the overhead, so sound board is cheap and easy to cut, and hang. It also adds a R-value of 2-3 and is fairly flame resistant.
- Q: Magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride
- Magnesium domestic annual output of about 12 million tons. Determination of sulfur and arsenic in sulfur and pyrite and steel. Standard for use as a white pigment. Light magnesium oxide is mainly used for the preparation of ceramic, enamel, refractory crucible and refractory bricks of raw materials. Also used as a polish adhesive url] paint] and paper filler, chloroprene rubber and fluororubber accelerator and activator. And magnesium chloride and other solutions mixed, can be made of magnesium oxide water. Medicine for antacids and laxatives, for gastric acid and more gastrointestinal ulcer disease. Raw materials used as catalysts and magnesium salts in the chemical industry. Also used for the production of glass, dyed meal, phenolic plastic and so on. Heavy-duty magnesia Milling industry for firing and grinding. Construction industry for the manufacture of artificial chemical floor artificial marble insulation board noise board plastic industry used as filler. It can also be used to produce other magnesium salts. For rubber, plastic, wire, cable dyes, paint, glass, ceramics, chemical reagents, medicine, food additives.
- Q: I have removed textured wall paper from ceiling, the plasterboard is in very good nick, but has gaps between sheets?I really dont want to have to get it all re-skimmed.would the correct approach be to plasterboard joint tape, then lining paper over over it, before painting?Id appreciate a how to.....
- when you say plasterboard if your talking about sheetrock than yes, youll be ok...if its plaster then you best bet would be to put a fresh layer of 1/4 sheetrock over it and have a nice new flat ceiling that wont crack up on you.
- Q: Bought a house about a year ago, and the basement ceiling is stuffed with fiberglass insulation. It's warm in the basement, especially the room where the furnace is, but we hardly ever use it.I'm wondering if all that insulation is trapping the heat the furnace gives off while it runs, preventing it from rising upstairs? Would it be worth removing it myself or just let it all stay in the ceiling? If you recommend removal what's the best way to dispose of it?Thanks!
- I recommend leaving it. The warmth you feel is coming from air leaks in the ducts and from the furnace itself. The insulation works as a sound deadener as well as an air infiltration barrier. I insulated my basement ceiling for the above reasons, and it worked out well for me. The air temp in the room above stays more uniform, and the furnace cycles on and off less often. At night, I keep the door to the furnace room open, so that little bit of extra warm air filters out.
- Q: I am redoing my basement and am wondeirng what is the best way to insulate the basement ceiling, mainly to cut down on noise. My house is fairly old and the hardwood floors we have upstairs creak very loudly when you walk on them, and can be heard through the basement. Would fiberglass insulation work to cut down on footstep noise? If i put two layers in the ceiling would that be better? Or if I carpet upstairs would that muffle the sound?
- We have carpet and insulation and it is still loud. Actually fixing the squeaks did more good than any of it. Try and find the worst floor boards, nail them down to the joist. We could never get them all. Good Luck
- Q: I recently installed speakers in my ceiling for my entertainment center, they sound fine but you can hear them through the floor upstairs. does anyone know what i can do?
- You can reduce some of the sound transmission by putting some absorbent material above the speaker (e.g. heavy weight fiberglass insulation), but if there is much bass the only really effective way to sound proofing is using something like green glue or RSIC clips to acoustically isolate the speaker from the floor above. See the links. You would need to construct a sealed (from above) drywall/gypsumboard box. See the two websites for further info. Note that the whole ceiling will be acting as a membrane and because it is coupled to the floor above don't expect miracles. The real solution is to retrofit the whole ceiling ... but I doubt you want to get into that!
- Q: What is fiberglass?
- Glass wool is made of centrifugal glass wool Felt is Owens Corning (OC) exclusive patented centrifugal technology, the melting glass fiber and thermosetting resin-based environmentally friendly formula made of adhesive products, is A flexible felt made of fiberglass with a diameter of only a few microns and can be optically selected according to the requirements. It has a large number of tiny air pores, so that it plays a role in thermal insulation, noise absorption and safety protection, steel structure is building insulation, noise absorption of the best materials. Glass wool is a category in glass fiber, is a kind of artificial inorganic fiber. Using quartz sand, limestone, dolomite and other natural ore as the main raw material, with some soda ash, borax and other chemical raw materials into glass. In the molten state, with the external force blowing into the flocculent fine fiber, fiber and fiber between the three-dimensional cross, intertwined with each other, showing a lot of small gaps. This gap can be seen as porosity. Therefore, glass wool can be regarded as porous material, with good insulation, sound absorption performance.
- Q: Home improvement, tooling need to use what decorative materials, all have their own purposes, ask you prawn
- Large construction team can be divided into hydropower, fire, air conditioning, mud, wood, paint, Each team needs the material is not a few words can be said clearly, but also what purpose, the more detailed the better? Your question is too general, haha
- Q: Not sure how to spell something that sounds like "ah-spec-tice" please tell me where I can get into on aspectice.
- if you mean the bumpy stuff that is texture, (or maybe older ceiling tiles) then it's 'asbestos'.... the only way to be sure is to have the paint and texture tested.... look up 'asbestos removal' in the phone book, call them and ask where to have test done.... if you have it, it's a stinker to be rid of..... we have it and have decided to use the thinest sheetrock and hang it over the old ceiling rather than remove the 'popcorn' texture...
