Q:I have a 2001 hyundai accent with 84,000 miles. It was running perfectly fine until I drove in the hurricane, about halfway to the store my check engine light came on any idea why? What should I do?: The check engine light actually has very little to do with the engine itself, it comes on when something in the emissions system isnt working properly. If you went through a bunch of standing water it most likely took out your exhaust o2 sensor. Not much to worry about but have an auto parts place do a scan for you.

Q:sorry to ask this in military but i figure yall will know best. i‘ve noticed that since we‘ve had usaa auto they have consistently gone up when our policy renews every 6 months. it‘s around 20-50 dollars every time. we have not had any tickets or accidents. when i call customer service they assure me it‘s nothing we‘ve done and that everyone‘s rates are going up. i find this hard to believe. anyone else having this issue?: I have USAA and one payment for every cycle I get the same thing. Here's what happens, keep in mind I'm using round and random numbers to make the math easier. They have insurance cycles of 6 months, so let's say your insurance for every 6 months is $650. Now, they may decide to only charge you a minimum payment of $100 a month, this means you still have $50 at the end of the 6 months to pay. Now, don't ask me why they don't just divide the $50 between the 6 months, I don't get it either. But you have a certain amount you have to pay every 6 months, with the option of paying a fraction of that amount every month. At the end you make that last payment, and whatever is left over, then your insurance renews for another 6 months and it starts over.

Most have a computer that they can hook up to your vehicle and get the code to determine what the problem may be. It's usually a free service. I know that Autozone does it for sure. Sounds like a clog in the EGR. How many miles are on the motor, and have you ever replaced the EGR before? EGRs go bad, most of the time you can do nothing about it. You could try to take it off and clean it out, that might help.

My light is back on and i took it to advance auto parts and they hooked it up and said the light was on due to a loose gas cap, so we cleared the code. I bought a new gas cap and now the light is back on. Should I take it back to the shop and spend more money to be told the same thing? Or is there something I can do for cheap, like a gas treatment?: The gas cap must fit snugly and too many people leave the car running while they are adding fuel at the gas station. If you do that, you will repeatedly get fuel system faults anytime the engine is running and the cap is open.

Q:The car is either a 2005 or 2006 and runs pretty great except the check engine light tends to come on and stay on and sometimes when the check engine light is on the car will slightly shake in sort of a jerk motion then it will stop immediately. Some auto stores will run codes for free - like Pep Boys, Auto Zone or O'Reilly (i think.) They will tell you what the code says and sell you any parts that they can determine. If it is fuel/emission related The light should STAY on. If it is mis-fire (which it sounds like you have) the light will go out after a while if the mis-fire stops. There are specific codes for misfire of a single cylinder. if you have one cyl misfire it could be plug or injector. There is code for random misfire. If you have that it could be water in fuel or bad fuel can cause this. If fuel is ok could be bad failing fuel pump or plugged fuel filter. Any competent technician should be able to diagnose it. If it has a drain plug in the bottom of the fuel tank have someone crack loose the plug and drain a quart or so out into a pan. Water and gas don't mix - so look for globs of water - water lays on the bottom of the tank and occasionally gets slopped around where it gets sucked into the fuel intake. Can cause your symptoms. Auto stores sell fuel Dryers that will dissolve water and run it through the system. ask them about it.
