- If your putting it in just to sell it, why do you care if it lasts 10 years or not? Materials and labor for under 2000 may be a stretch, especially if you have a large area you want to carpet. If I were you, I would look into carpets that are not as expensive. The people who buy the house may not even like the carpet and rip it out and put hardward or a different color anyway, so lasting 10 years should not be a concern. That is a big part of your expense right there!

- Q: I just bought an area rug from Home Depot. It is wool with a fabric backing and they have used a glue that I have had problems with on other rugs. It smells so bad, that is all I can smell when I walk into that room. I smelled the sample piece when I ordered it and it didn't smell. I have gotten rid of other rugs in the past that never lost the smell. Now What?
- Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) is great for absorbing odours. Sprinkle on the rug (the reverse as well as the front if necessary) leave for a couple of hours and vacuum off. You can also put a few drops of your favourite essential oil onto the rug to freshen up the smell. Also, as daft as it sounds, to get rid of chemical smells from the room itself such as glue, paint etc peel an onion, chop it in half and cover it with water, leave it in the room overnight and it will absorb the smell (don't ask me why this works but it does!) - willhemina is right the carpet is now dyed. one solution is to replace the carpet in that spot. you do this by using something square, like a cake pan, as a pattern to cut out the stained carpet. if you have scraps left from the installation use the same pan to cut a replacement piece. if not you can use carpet out of a closet. before you place the patch in the hole, use masking tape to cover the padding. spread elmer's glue on the masking tape. lay the patch on the carpet and brush it with your hand to insure that the grain is running the same way as it does around the patch. place the patch in the hole and allow the glue to dry 24 hours. blend in the patch with the surrounding carpet with your hand. if you've done a good job you won't be able to tell the patch is there.

- If it is a tight, level loop commercial grade carpet with very little give to it, you can install a snap together laminate floor over the carpet. If there is a wood subfloor under the carpet, you do not need a pad or anything under the laminate. If there is a concrete slab under the carpet, you should probably put down a moisture barrier under the laminate, such as a sheet of visquine. The really great thing about this type of floor, is that when you move, you can unsnap it, take it up, and take it with you to your next rental without doing any damage to the home. Laminate comes in a wood look and a tile look. The tile look is more expensive, but it looks great in kitchens. The wood look is marketed two ways: really cheap, fake looking stuff, and higher end laminate that really looks like and has some texture and graining like real wood. I highly recommend WilsonArt for endurance, but it costs more. Shaw laminate has some amazingly realistic looking styles for reasonable prices. If you buy an $0.89 per sq ft laminate, you will probably get some chips in it. Make sure you have some left over in case you need to do a repair (no matter which brand you buy.) Styles are discontinued regularly!
