- Q: Anybody have any good websites where I can find history of the Metal Tulip Lawn Chairs - or metal lawn chairs in general - manufacture info, design, quality, what to look for in originals, replicas, etc. Any clue who designed the first one?
- This furniture is a symbol of the simpler times that followed the first world war. Previously, American designers had copied European steamer chairs, or French bistro chairs. The first companies to manufacture metal gliders and swings were The J.R. Bedding Company, in Philadelphia and Howell Manufacturing, whose designs were a rage at the 1939 World Fair! One of the first designers to create a chair that was marketed to the masses was Viktor Schreckengost, an eclectic inventor also responsible for the design of metal children's pushcars and bicycles for the recently defunct Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company (A distant relative informed me recently that their family name, popular in western PA, means scary ghost!) His Beverly Hills model, sold through Sears Roebuck during WWII, can still be found across the country. Schreckengost designed the chair by offering a free drink to all 428 workers at the Murray plant in return for their participation in its creation. Each plant worker sat on the lid of a barrel layered with 8 inches of clay covered with plastic. The prototype was created, the first metal die-cut made, and when the war ended sales flourished. The joyous optimism of the nation was reflected in the c-0-0-0-l new color choices: red, lime, lavender, canary yellow and blue. It's lines were sleek and modern, much like the polished chrome and tubular steel evident in everything from baby buggies to mixmasters. Victor Just died this January
- Q: I am getting married this October on a super tight budget. The hall already have the metal folding chairs and tables. Is there a way to dress it up in a very inexpensive but beautiful way so that it won't look too ugly?
- You could just get some tulle fabric from a fabric store and wrap it around the back part of the chair (not the seat) and tie it off pretty (although even a knot with tulle can look nice) and then maybe add a little inexpensive charm to the tied off part. A lot of craft stores, and eBay, carry little charm type things, maybe if you have a theme or color going you could pick something like that out.
- Q: Well I have ran into a little issue with my wedding ceremony...The only place I have managed to find to rent enough chairs for my wedding is booked full (of course) well my wedding will be taking place outside in June so I would really like to have something for guests to sit on (not the ground). Any one have any creative ideas....my mother suggested bales of hay.... Future brides learn from my mistake it's never to early to book your rentals :/
- Where is your reception at? Can you borrow chairs from there? Check with local halls and churches to see if they have enough chairs that you can rent from them. Many outdoor weddings only have a few chairs set up for parent and grandparents (and any other elderly persons), the rest of the guests just stand. Most ceremonies only last about 20 minutes...and you can make sure yours is on the shorter side rather than longer. Bales of hay would be fine if your doing a country or western wedding....otherwise it will look silly...JMHO
- Q: Chair came from the Blackrock Hotel in Cohasset, ma after it was demolished 40+ yrs ago. They are no signatures or dates on it.
- Hotel chairs are usually mass produced, so there will be thousands of them, unless they were custom to that hotel, then there were only a few. Further research will give you some sort of an answer. Or, find a high end antique store and ask their opinion as to the uniqueness of the chair.

- Q: Imagine a typical chair, with legs perpendicular to the seat. It must support 135kg. The two front legs act as two supports. Instead of the back two legs, there is one support. This one support must be between the middle of the chair and where the two back legs would be. What calculations could I carry out to work out the load on each support for when the back leg is in different positions? Thanks!
- Can we look at the cautions and exceptions to this model? First of all the back legs in a normal chair are not at the back of the seat but extend out further so they are under the top of the back of the chair or further. In addition, the center of mass of someone sitting in a chair is not in the center of the chair but is close to the bottom of the tilted back where the hip bones support the upper half or more of the body weight. Having said that, change the specifications so the 135kg is centered on the chair seat and the single support is moved in various locations from that center away from the front legs (and the chair itself has no weight) The distance from the front legs to the middle is D and the seat is 2D deep. The distance from the middle to the rear support is X and varies from 0 to D. When X is 0, then entire weight is on the rear support. When X is D, then half the weight is on the front legs and half on the support. Therefore the amount of weight in any position is F = 135 * (D / (D + X)) When X =0, D/D+0 = 1 When X =D, D/D+D = 1/2

- Walkers are safety hazards and they can cause developmental delays. High chairs are highly useful items both for meal time and to include a child who can sit well in family life at eye level with everybody else.
- Q: I like it in the Classic Boucle, in the color Black Iris.It was designed in 1948, by the same guy who designed the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.It's my dream chair. What do you think?
- It does look like a very nice chair. Since it was designed by a civil engineer, the price, cant be considered too ridiculous. I think you have answered you own Q though since you did say it's your dream chair. I wouldn't let stranger get in the way of my dreams.
