- Q: I have a chair with a broken back, it can be detached from the rest of the chair and has a metal piece that goes into the padded/cloth part of the back.
- Chairs can be a bear to fix. Depending on what piece broke, it usually indicates metal fatigue from low quality steel used at high stress points (an engineering short-sight). On those kinds of chairs I just take off the broken pieces (arms, if any) and use the bottom as a roll around stool, cause fixing them only redistributes the stress load to another weak spot. They can be handy in the shop for working on the car (waxing the lower half and polishing the mags, etc.)
- Q: My friend and I have been informed by our lecturer that we need to make something out of concrete and we decided to make a chair. However we are unsure of how to attach the legs to the seat of the chair and the seat to the back. We were also informed of a special paint/substance that can be applied to a mold so that when the concrete has set it can easily be removed from the mold but our lecturer did not know the correct name for it so we are unsure of where to look. - Q: i just got a chair and its at perfect height when its all the way down.. but when i get off the seat.. the chair shoots back up.. when i sit back down, it sinks all the way down.. please tell me a way the seat can just stay down without going back up when im not on it..?
- I don't know what make and model your chair is, and thus what features it has, BUT... most of these chairs has a pneumatic cylinder in the support column, and for adjusting seat height, a LEVER beneath the seat, usually near the right front corner as you sit in the chair. To use this type of adjustment, you press the handle upward against the bottom of the seat, and THEN sit on it, forcing the seat down. When the seat is down, or at the desired elevation, release the handle, and the seat should stay there. If you want the seat at a higher level, remove ALL load from the seat, press the release handle, and a spring should lift the seat. Then when you have the desired height, release the handle and the seat should stay at that level. IF the seat is raising all by itself when you're not sitting on it, I suspect that the adjusting VALVE is not seating properly, and allows air back into the cylinder, and the spring raises the seat [sort of like magic!!!!]. Turn the chair over and check the valve [if it's not concealed] and look for lint or debris which is keeping the valve from fully seating and sealing the vent hole. IF the chair is new, I recommend returning it to the place you bought it and REQUEST REPLACEMENT on the basis that the chair is DEFECTIVE. If it's not new, then it's a matter of either cleaning the valve, or if it's not blocked, then repairing it so it can seat [and seal] properly.

- Q: i have these wooden chairs that have dried peeling paint i need to get off so i can stain them. there is no varnish or stain i can see, just old paint. Is sanding it off the best way to go? are there sanders small enough to get into the corners and grooves? i am pregnant, so chemicals are not an option. thank you!
- For the corners and grooves just fold the sand paper and rub into the corners. They do have citrus based strippers that you can use afetr most of the sanding is done. Just apply and scrub with an old toothbrush. Use steel wool to remove and wipe the piece down with isoproyl alcohol before refinishing.

- They don't usually make repair parts for those because it's so rare that anybody wants to repair one. You would have to buy a new chair to get the base, but if you do that you might as well just use the new chair.
