- Hi, Bro your rug out on a clean concrete surface if possible.Wet your rug and apply soap with a soft brush, rinsing and repeating until clean. Ensure the rug is rinsed well leaving no soap residue. Then squeegee out excess water and leave rug flat to dry. When pile feels dry turn over then dry back but do not leave exposed to the sun for more than 2 days as it can fade your carpet. - Frontgate and Grandinroad offer indoor/outdoor rugs that look and feel like quality rugs but are easy to care for as they are able to be hosed down. They come in both traditional and contemporary looks and are great for high traffic areas and kids and pets. I have several of them inside my home and no one knows they aren't a higher quality rug. The Pottery Barn shot tells me you are looking at something more comtemporary so something with some great color choices to perk up the room would be great. These rugs are really inexpensive and great look so check them out. They come in all sizes and shapes. Grandinroad is slightly less expensive than Frontgate but look at both.

- Find a good carpet cleaner. ;) Depends on the color of the carpet, really. Find a mild cleaner -- or even laundry soap, if you aren't sure what cleaners to use -- and put a bit on the carpet. Get a toothbrush or something that can really get in the carpet and scrub as hard as you can. Rinse w/hot water, blow dry it and see how it looks. Oddly enough, I just finished scrubbing hot sauce out of a white area rug thanks to my kid. ha!

- Have you tried calling your insurance company? It is really hard to get that out of a carpet and the bacteria that may be growing can be dangerous especially if you have allergies. If you do call them make sure to ask like it's a hypothetical question. You know, act like you've been shopping around a little more and you wanted to know if you have coverage for that situation and what it would cost to get that kind of coverage etc. If you have no insurance you might want to just get an estimate from a professional cleaning company. The ones that specialize in flood or fire damage clean up. If you are truly desperate and have very little to spend you could try some oxy-clean. Mix up a couple of gallons of it. Spray it over the carpet until you've saturated the whole area including the mat underneath and then leave it for about one hour. Then use a commercial cleaning machine(the kind you rent from a store) to suck up as much of the water as possible. Put a fan on the carpet and turn either your air conditioner or heat on because that will help dehumidify the area and make it dry up faster. After it's all nicely dried (aproximately 1 to 2 days). Sprinkle the carpeting with a powdered carpet odor remover and vaccuum it up after a few minutes. Oxy clean does kill mildew which is the culprit in most carpet smells. Oxy clean can remove some of the color from your carpet but not like bleach does! I haven't had it lighten anything of mine but that is the warning on the package! My daughter likes to play with water on her carpet in her bedroom (much to my dismay!) The oxyclean and carpet deodorizer work well at getting rid of that horrible smell.

- there's a few things that live in carpets or breed there. but moths are the ones that are famous for holes. the larvae eat the rug then become moths. If you're lucky a little flea spray and the worms will come up so you can see them. start using boric acid or diatomaceous earth (buy the kind for this use not the pool filter material). sprinkle on carpet and brush deep with broom. Vacuum more regularly and put down more boric acid every few months at least.
