- Q: looking for the comparison and then finaly the conclusion about the water pumps instaaled in the IC engines. Where we should stick to the tradional mechanical driven water pumps or electrical water pumps? which one is better!! any information/ response is appreciated
- Duh (I have to assume that IC = a engine (as fitted in a car) if there's no fan belt, how would YOU drive a water pump? I suggest the person that asked the question has PEDALS fitted to his/her IC the fan belt went when radiator fans had motors added (which was good as the fan was a unwanted load on the engine ...you only need a fan when stationary)
- Q: Do I need to change the water pump if I replace the timing belt ? and does the water pump connect with the timing belt ? if the water pump goes out will it bend the rods ?
- There are always two reasons for which mechanic or the car owners should insist to change the water pump whenever, is time to change the timing belt -If your water pump is driven by the same timing belt; you should have to replace it ; or else you may pay more money for real serious damage in the future if it seizes due to high mileage on it or any fatigue of it,s own. -But if the water pump is driven with a separate belt . You should put that consideration in account for the reason to save money at this point, and furthermore prevent any Sudan over heating condition at any given time. The best way to know if your water pump whether driven by the timing or not ! You simply need to find out what type and size engine you have . Then you go to any auto part and ask them to show you the new pump. Try to show them some sign that you are going to buy the pump in order for them to show you the right pump. If that pump comes with a sprocket pulley. definitely is driven by the timing belt. If in fact your water pump is driven by the timing belt- Yes! you should anticipate to prepare a large amount of money to take care of that big damage within that engine( If that engine is interference engine )
- Q: I have a 2004 Toyota Sienna and it has 80k+ miles on it. I guess it is the drive belt that is making the noise and I decide to have it changed. I can have the timing belt changed too because it is due at 90k miles. The dealer guy told me that I should also have the water pump changed too because of 2 reasons:1. the new timing belt will cause pressure to the old water pump. If not changed, it will leak in weeks.2. it is cheaper to do it altogether.Without changing the water pump, it would cost about $300.All would cost $1000+.My friend who also has a Sienna that has more miles on it, told me that he did not have to change the water pump.Your advice about the water pump is?
- Change the the timing belt if it breaks you can bend a valve the smaller import engine have what they call a zero (0) tolerance. For the water pump it runs off of the timing belt so since your timing belt is already off you should change the water pump.Another words you will need to tear the timing belt back out in order to change the water pump not if but when it goes out.The dealer price is not bad for a dealer you might be able to save a little more if you shop around GOOD LUCK
- Q: I would like to know how difficult it is to change a water pump on my mustang? Is it something I can do by myself? I do know about cars and can perform general maintenance, I am not totally ignorant to whats going on underneath the hood of my car I'm just not sure if I have the tools needed and how difficult it is to do. What tools do I need? Do I need a torque wrench? If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks!
- It's not hard, just time consuming. You will need BOTH metric and standard size sockets deep sockets and/or wrenches. For the tensioner pulley you only need 18mm closed-end wrench and you can pull upwards on the tensioner to release tension on the belt. Use a brand new water pump. Do not EVER use a remanufactured water pump. With a new pump you will have a lifetime warranty from any of the popular brand name auto parts stores. For the water pump the battery being disconnected is not required. That is required depending on the car you're working on, but on a 5.0L Mustang it's not. Be sure to stop by Walmart or parts store and pick up a tube of Permatex Blue RTV. Apply a thin bead of RTV on the gasket mating surface then put the gasket on. Don't do this until you're ready to put the pump on. Be sure to use a good scraper to remove old gasket material from the gasket mating surface of the timing cover. DO NOT USE A TORQUE WRENCH ON WATER PUMP BOLTS ON A 5.0L MUSTANG. These bolts are very hard to find now. You only need to snug them at first and then hand tighten them. The factory bolts are notorious for corroding and becoming stuck in the block after their heads snap off. Do not turn the bolts too quickly and be sure to clean them off with a wire brush if they have ANY corrosion and spray them with lubricant before reinserting.
- Q: OK i was driving and i noticed the gas pedal wouldn't really work and people were telling me to move so right away i moved to the side of the road and got my car towed home. a couple details are that there was smoke coming out of the hood, don't know what part of the engine though.there was not much water in the water pump. my dad thinks that the problem was it was leaking the water.the car turns on ac works it just shakes when it turn on the motor no condition to drive it obviously but it does take a little time to start the engine. i want to know if anyone knows what may be the problem and about how much it may cost.ohh btw this car model is a 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible 2 door.thank you!
- did u get a mechanic to do it? or do it your self? in case you had a mechanic do it, ask them to repair it in case you had no problems earlier. must be thermostat, must be you dont have adequate coolant in radiator or perhaps suitable coolant to water ratio. All i understand is you need to bleed out the radiator to eliminate all air after water pump is taken off and placed lower back on, because would reason problems aswell. ok nicely you only as much as date it, so i'm too, your mechanic sounds like a dumb ****, he ought to have bled air out of radiator, the actuality he instructed you is weird and wonderful, ought to have fixed it then and there. that is a vital step of adjusting water pump. If there is air in it, your radiator and water pump wont be rotating the water wonderful. tell him to repair it and say you probably did your analyze and you're actually not paying yet another cent!
- Q: First I need to take off the belt, remove power steering pump, remove water pump bolts (the bolts are various length), remove water pump pulley (from old pump), install pulley on new pump, install new pump (with gasket and bolts in the right holes), install power steering pump, install belt. Is this the correct order? Can somebody throw any tips at me (somebody who has done it on this vehicle). It's a 2001 WJ with a 4L.

- Q: What is the average life of a water pump in a car?
- to many factors to consider such as: materials used for pump, pump design, the engine operator's driving habits. You could have had the wrong belt put on and that would effect pump life. There are just to many variables. I'd say over 60,000 easy. Most pumps come with LLT Warranties b/c you should only have to replace one once.
