No, it wasn't designed for that. However, the machine will work the entire chest with the emphasis on the mid pec. If you want specifically target the upper pec, use an incline bench and do flys and dumbbell presses. And, just the opposite for the lower pec....a decline bench. You'll feel the burn in the anterior deltoid if you're working the upper pec. You'll get a more diverse and thorough chest workout if you do all three...flat bench, incline, and decline. It's also worth mentioning that the exercise and equipment only get you in the ballpark and what has the final say in what muscles are being worked is the brain. For example, a bench press uses both the pectoral and the triceps as major movers. How much of the motion is pec and how much is triceps can be controlled in part by your brain. It requires that you understand the muscular activity and can control the muscles individually when at rest. Flexing the muscles individually at rest and with no motion is one way to help train your brain to understand how to contract the muscles individually. Then, if you focus on working the stronger muscle (pec) more fully throughout reps, you'll help prevent the triceps from failing prematurely and keep you from quitting before you have a good pec workout. Where I worked out many years ago we called that putting the mind in the muscle...mentally focusing on the target muscle so it gets the greatest possible workout while saving the weaker supporting muscles for the last reps. Q: i have just turned 16 and weigh about 10 stone.if i bench press 20kg will it do much building do my chest muscle mass. im doing 20 cus iv just started. any tips?
i don't think so because to build muscle mass you need to do a weight that you can do only 4-5 reps of. I am 17, 9stone and bench press 100kg to build muscle and 70kg to build endurance. Try to chose a weight that you can only do a few reps in strict form. Do about 3-4 sets of these. To build chest muscle you can also try pec fly.
Q: Stop you from growing? Like your height. Because i've been bench pressing since i was 14 and im 17 now and i've been the same height ever since. Could this be why im not growing anymore? I stopped doing squats this year i did them since my freshman year in highschool (i was in football). Maybe that could be why too?
I personally think that, since you're body wasn't done growing (and i doubt that at 17 it is done either...but correct me if i'm wrong ). Im pretty sure the bench pressing would actually just focus on your upper body therefore i doubt it had anything to do with your growth. However squats (if i remember what those are...) do use your lower body. I'd be more concerned with that, I've always been told not to do any kind of Weight lifting or anythin before i was done growing. My father almost had the same problem that you have, he weight lifted young, and never grew up really after 15. Coincidence maybe? meh...

Dumbbell's allow for a natural range of motion to target your pecs. Second, become good friends with all types of push ups. This is convenient for you, since 135 lbs on a bench press is a 45 lb plate or a 35 lb plate, depending on the weight of the bar. But first, finding your bench press max, whatever you can succesfully press one time, is the first place to start. Then, you should do sets of 5 or 6, using about 80% or 85% of your max as a bench press workout. Make sure to mix it up a little though, so your muscles don't get used to one thing. Always push yourself so you can eventually increase the weight you use; you'll get more muscle in no time!
