- Q: I have a honda civic and i took it to get an oil change and they told me that i had an oil leak because my valve cover needed replacing. I did not let them do the work. I called my personal mechanic and he's out of commission for a little while, so he referred me to a friend of his. He said he cleaned all of the built up oil and replaced the valve cover. I noticed yesterday that my car looks like it is leaking oil really bad. I'm wondering, could this be from him washing the old oil that was leaking? My belts seem to be squeaking, like they do when it rains. Any ideas? could this just be excess water that he cleaned it out with?
- To determine If the valve cover-gasket is leaking again, take the car to a wand-type car wash. Shut the motor off, open the hood and thoroughly wash the engine and compartment down with hot water and soap. Concentrate on the valve cover itself and the mating surface between the valve cover and cylinder head. Rinse with hot water spray. This is the only way to clean-up the previous mess so everything will be dry and clean. Use a flash-light if you have one to inspect all the way around the lip of the valve cover to look for any bright, shiny oil that could be leaking again after a short drive. Having been cleaning engine compartments for 45 years at car washes, don't worry about electrical connections, cracking or breaking anything. There are quite a few tricks to make valve covers seal properly. To start with the cylinder head has to be clean and dry, the valve cover had to be clean, *flat and dry and use only premium Felpro, silicone impregnated valve cover gaskets.
- Q: I have a 3-circuit sprinkler system in my yard (built by me, last year). I discovered this week that I overtightened the connection between the valves and the downstream pipes, and 2 of the three valves are cracked, and leaking, at the connection. I replaced all 3 valves, and now I need to reconnect them to the supply. But this means I'm working backward - when I bult the system last year, I worked downstream - I built the manifold first, connected the valves, then the remainder of each branch. Now, I have to make the new manifold fit the valves, and naturally, they don't line up perfectly. Any tips/tricks on connecting valves in this situation? Is there such a thing as flexible pipe that can withstand continuous pressure? I'm using unions at both ends of each valve to help things go together/come apart more easily.
- valve manifolds are something that requires practice and experience. i used to struggle with them at work until i did a good bit of them. 3 zones is not that many valves so it shouldnt be too difficult. if they wont line up exactly right, i would recommend adding longer peices of pipe to the mainline side of the vavles and re routing the supply line futher back and you will have more room to flex the pipe and vavles into the Tees and 90s. do not use any form of flexible pipe on any mainline. you will regret it. lol the bigger the hole you dig will give you the most room and the more pipe, and room will give you more flexability to build the manifold. it is easier to connect the valves the way you did it first though, but you can do it either way. good luck and hope this helps
- Q: What are the requirements for valve automation?
- Valves are commonly available for both liquid and gas. You would begin by determining operating pressure, volume, nature of fluid, and temperature of fluid. The electrical requirements are as simple as supplying power to a solenoid. Mechanically, automatic valves are sophisticated. Begin by researching the water supply valves for a domestic washing machine.
- Q: My vehicle has 160,000 miles and has burned 2 quarts of oil at 3000 miles. Someone told me to change the PCV valve because sometimes a bad PCV valve can cause oil consumption. I appreciate your assistance.
- This okorder /.. It will be on either the left or right side of your motor and it will be on top of the valve cover. This would not cause you motor to consume that much oil. You have a high mileage vehicle so you your piston rings and internal seals are worn out. There is really nothing you can do besides an engine overhaul. If you strongly feel its the PCV you can pick one up for a couple bucks, but it wont solve your problem. My suggestion is to keep driving and just keep an eye on the oil level. Carry a quart or 2 in your truck and just add as needed.
- Q: Hello, I went to my garage last friday because my exhaust emmisions light was on, on my Bora MK4 2003 52 plate 1.6 16V. They said its a faulty EGR valve which could be from being clogged up with sh*t. But they said it would be fine to drive, and that the rough idle wouldn't harm the car, and to unplug it if the rough idle became annoying. Its now sunday 3 days since the garage diagnosed it I drove about 250 miles over these days. With the exhaust emissions light coming on then sometimes going off. I think the EGR Valve keeps sticking closed and the engine is very hard to start. Is there anything I can do to help start the car? which is better having it plugged in or unplugged? how do you take the EGR Valve out and clean it what tools are needed is it complicated. any ideas on how I can help it start ? I've tried unplugging it, it makes no difference really.
- EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, and is not really good for a car. It causes deposits on the back of the valves, and ruins the valve guides. If the EGR sticks, it also won't let the engine start or have maximum power. Unplugging it, and plugging up the vacuum hose, will prevent it from opening if it is closed, but will not close it if stuck open already. What you need to do then is to remove and clean it will chemicals or wire brush, until if closes again. You can also plug it off with a plate underneath it. The only time you ever need EGR is if you have a high compression engine that would have pre-ignition without the EGR being used to poison the mixture and prevent pre-ignition. But if you run premium gas, then you should not need an EGR at all, and you should consider removing and plugging it.
- Q: My 10 year old boy was diagnosed with a leaking heart valve yesterday. The Doctor is trying to get him in to see a specialist asap. She didn't seem that concerned with it,but I don't know if she was just trying to keep us calm about it.How serious is this, and is surgery the only way to fix it,or do they have meds for this condition.
- I was also diagnosed with a leaky Aortic valve at 10 years old. Mine wasnt really bad at the time, i am now 16 years old and still havent had surgery for it(surgery is really the only way to fix it, they may put him on meds also though) Your Son should be fine, i had no restrictions do to this heart problem, i lived a normal life but the best thing is to have him see a cardiologist to see how severe it is. Best of luck to you and your son
- Q: My grandfather is going in for a valve replacement.. and I'm really worried about him.. I just want some information.. any good websites if you have them.. I looked on google.. But if you have any good ones that would be great..No horrible comments please..
- It's a fairly common procedure. Though there are risks since it does involve open heart surgery, most bounce back quickly with recovery time depending on age and health history. I am sure he will feel much better post surgery. Good luck.
- Q: What would be the effect on valve opening if the clearance was set too large or too small, please help
- We have to assume the camshaft is the standard one that came from the factory. #1. If the valve clearance between the rocker arm and end of the valve stem is set too close you risk burning the exhaust valves. As the coolant travels through the cylinder head it cools the valve seats. The valve seats cool the valves. If the valve clearance between the rocker arms and valves are too loose damage may result to the end of the valve and rocker arm. You'll also loose cam duration and valve lift.
- Q: im looking for the egr valve on a 97 mazda 626 its not in top of engine like other cars where can it be?????o and its a 4 cylinder
- okay your gonna look at your intake manifold. Then locate where your air intake connects to the throttle body. Look around the throttle body and you should see the egr valve it will be hidden by your air intake but if you look hard enough you'll find it and also if you see in vacuum lines running around there, they will point you in the right direction because your egr valve has two vacuum lines that run to it. hopefully that helps.
- Q: I'm going to replace a valve guide and wondering how I should do it.Should I drill into the existing valve guide to the point it's small enough to pinch with some pliers and pull it out? When I put the new one in, should I use a wooden dowel and an air nailer to pound the guide into place? The more info. the better. It's my first time doing this. Thanks!
- Ohhhh man. NO DRILLS. I assume you are referring to an Aluminum Cylinder head. To do it correctly you need a drift punch that has a pilot size of the valve stem, and an outside diameter that is just a few thousands smaller than the guide. Disassemble the head completely, put in Moms oven at the highest setting it will go to ( 5-6 hundred degrees ) Pound old guide out from the combustion camber side. ( have every thing ready to go this FFer will be hot ). Coat new guide with something like STP, put in freezer, carefully align it, then slam it home from the valve train side, don't pussy around, get it in before it attracts the heat of the head, if you stop or it stops you will have to repeat the entire process. If you gall the Aluminum ( say O-**** ) Since you have to hit this thing fairly hard you will need to refinish the inside of the guide with the appropriate reamer. Then refinsh Valve seat ( they never, NEVER line up perfectly )
