Q:for a diesel generator of about 113 HP. What is the typical exhaust temperature?: i ve worked on a 440kw engine as a general rule the exhaust temperatures are never let to go in excess of 400 degrees. normal exhaust temperature at 300 kw was 350 deg celsius.

Q:If electric vehicles included a generator they could charge the battery while moving. It seems the best choice to me.: Because a generator runs on gas. And they do have regenerating chargers while the car is moving. They just are not a typical generator

Q:If oil prices went super crazy.: If oil prices continue to go up with no sign of relief (meaning years into the future) then, as others have already said, I think many of the large railroads which could afford it would begin contemplating energizing at least their most heavily used main lines. Still, even with today's AC technology being very efficient and allowing one to string wires over vast distances without a significant power loss it is still awfully expensive. Trains Magazine covered a piece a few years ago on the likelihood of railroads (Class Is) ever electrifying significant portions of their systems and came to the conclusion that unless absolutely justifiable they would seek other alternatives due to high costs of construction. While steam might be such an alternative they would try it's still pretty maintenance intensive and would require frequent fuel stops resulting in increased transit times (even with the newer technologies the motive power would employ). Just purely an educated guess but I think that the industry might go for something like the locomotives developed by RailPower Technologies, which use batteries and diesel generators as prime movers. If a company like RailPower could develop a much more powerful model than what they currently offer (which is only around 2,000 hp), similar to the SD70ACes and ES44ACs of today, then you would have an extremely fuel efficient locomotive that is powerful enough to move the heaviest freight yet also very environmentally friendly.

Compressed air was pumped into the cylinders of the engine until it gained sufficient speed to allow ignition, then fuel was applied to fire the engine. The compressed air was supplied by a smallauxiliary engine or by high pressure air cylinders carried by the locomotive. Electric starting is now standard. It works the same way as for an automobile, with batteries providing the power to turn a starter motor which turns over the main engine. In older locomotives fitted with DC generators instead of AC alternators, the generator was used as a starter motor by applying battery power to it.

They just explain it differently. Somewhere on the generator control panel, there is a meter that reads Hours on it. It is measuring (counting), in hours and tenths of an hour, how many hours the engine has been operating. It activates whenever the engine is turned on and deactivates when the engine is turned off. It's the best way to figure out when an engine needs service when you cant count its use in miles or kilometers.

Q:can they be quiet? I was thinking about buying one sense we seem to have an outage every winter. Just wouldn't want to have an extremely loud generator running disturbing the neighbors: diesel generator normally make huge noise if you want to less this sound then use a soundproof diesel generator.
