- Q: Could I use red diesel in a diesel generator legally in the UK? Can I add vegetable oil to this and if so, in what ratio? Where are good sources of vegetable oil?
- Red diesel is agricultural, no tax or tax reduced. The Red is only a dye to distinguish it from tax paid diesel. However using it illegally can result in very hefty fines if caught. Used and cleaned vegetable oil can be mixed with diesel, actual proportions I'm not sure of, but I think 3:1 oil to diesel. There are probably sites that explain in more detail. However why it has to be used veg. oil I don't know.
- Q: engine is on a generator with about 800 hrs. changed fuel and fuel is getting to cylinder, pulled valve cover and valves are moving like they should, sprayed either in air intake and still no pop. any ideas other than to scrap the engine
- What brand of Diesel engine is it? If it is a Detroit Diesel try resetting the air box lever.
- Q: I know with cars there is a blue book but how does it work for a generator? We have an 80kw Kholer Diesel generator with 1,050 hrs on it and it's 13 years old. It gets regular maintenance and is in great shape. I've been looking online but can't seem to figure out how much it's worth.
- $8,000-$15,000 depending on the exact model and much more information. Generators have as many options as cars, and that is why the prices vary.
- Q: how much power do they require and how much room do they take up?
- If you are talking about the truck (traction) motors on a locomotive, then whole power system! diesel engine, generator, exciter generator, truck motors, can range anywhere from seven hundred horsepower for a switch engine up to several thousand horsepower for a line haul locomotive. The traction motors get their power from the generator which is connected to the diesel engine. There is no direct mechanical connection from the diesel engine to the wheels. All the diesel engine does is turn the generator. The power from the generator is what running the traction motors which in turn drives the wheels of the locomotive. That is where the term diesel over electric comes from. In short the diesel engine drives the generator. The power from the generator drives the traction motors. The traction motors drive the wheels. The wheels drive the locomotive. The amount of power the generator puts out is controlled by two things. How fast it is turning (number of RPM and how much excitation voltage it's fields are being excited with by the exciter generator. Both the RPM's and the excitation voltage is controlled by the engineer. The advantage of using diesel over electric is they can tandem several locomotives together to pull long trains and be able to control them all from the lead engine. (Locomotive) As far as size Look at the trucks on the locomotive. The area between the wheels is pretty muchly taken up by the traction motors. Here is another fact. The generator is a DC generator and the traction motors are DC motors. Most of the time they are series wound DC motors for better starting torque since they are always coupled to a load. Here is another fact from the been there done that file! Traction motors are nasty and dirty to work on like when you have to change brushes and seat the new brushes and horne the commutator
- Q: I have never had any interest in cars until recently when diesel engines have started to feel like important and valuable power sources moving forward.
- They've always been popular in Europe as they have ridiculous fuel taxation. And diesels have traditionally gotten better fuel economy. But these days with direct injected turbo gas engines becoming more prevalent the diesel's fuel economy edge is diminishing. Case in point, the BMW 335i and the BMW 335d. The gas engine gets almost the same mileage as the diesel as you can see here fueleconomy /feg/Find.do?a same deal with the MB 350 as you can see here fueleconomy /feg/Find.do?a Diesels are still quite important for cargo transportation, industrial use, and agriculture, as they have always been. But no offense, but if you're just now finding out about diesel cars, then you've missed the boat by a few decades, diesel cars have been around for a long time.
- Q: how much amount of diesel oil(inside a generator) is required to generate 1KWh of electricity? Waiting for answers, thanx.
- the amount of fuel used matches the power of the load, el the tax power and size the power generation
- Q: I need the information to do a science project - how is this electrical energy stored?
- It's funny you should ask because I was just researching the wind energy subject while looking at getting a job with a company that makes generators. Generally I've found that it isn't! Wind power is usually expected to be supplimental to the power grid because you can't depend on it 24/7. The only exceptions to this are remote areas where they have no power grid access and even then they usually have diesel generators too. I have seen small ones on sailing boats where I'm sure it just tops up their batteries. Waste byproducts are zero or even negative. I say negative because in a lot of places the excess power is fed back into the power grid reducing the need for the other power stations to pollute as much. In fact the only bad things I've heard are from those that think they are an eye sore, those that think they are noisy (which generally are not) and those that think birds will crash into them. it's funny that they don't complain about the glowing ones that nest at my local nuke generating plant tho ;o)
- Q: i mean from off state to ON State, the amount of diesel it reqiures to burn out.
- Very little. Less than it takes to run at power while underway. The fuel lines are only so big, and it can't flow fuel any faster than that. There is a myth that machines take a LOT of energy to start up. Some people say it takes as much power to start your PC as it does to run it for 30 minutes. The same is often said of fluorescent lights. That is not true - it is essentially never true. It is used as an excuse to avoid shutting the thing down. Why can't they? Because the pipe or wire supplying the fuel/energy is only so big. If a PC took that much energy to start up, it would trip the circuit breaker. The energy also would have to go somewhere, and energy always goes away as heat. A massive surge of startup energy would be a massive surge of heat, which usually burns or explodes a thing. So no -- devices generally do NOT use massively more energy to start up than they do to stay running. Some times might have a startup surge of double, or perhaps triple - such as a hard drive or compressor spinning up. But nothing more than that, and only for an instant - too fast for most circuit breakers to trip.
- Q: I recently had solar Pannels installed. The panels generate enough electricity to power my house during the day. I use a 20kw silent diesel generator to power my house at night. I really hate my power provider PGE. If i tell them to shut off my power, Will they remove that tacky smart meter from my property?
- Use a bat and take it off yourself
- Q: For hydropower how much MWh can be generated with same capacity plant?. (Because plant never run for 24 hours of the day we need a factor to calculate above value)
- They sure do run 24 hours a day. Maybe not 365 days a year - allow maybe 1 week down time for maintenance. If you have a particular generator in mind, look up the operating specs for it.
