- Q: would sand be able to get through a cold air intake filter and if so, what damage can it now do to the engine?
- Normally the sand shouldn't get past the air filter, but it might clog it to the point that the air passage is completely obstructed; the engines can't operate without at least some air intake. I'd thoroughly clean (vacuum) the engine, especially the air intake. Remove the air filter and check for sand beyond it. If there is any, vacuum thoroughly, consider also changing the engine oil, oil filter and pray. Check all exposed and/or moving parts (alternator, power steering, a/c, timing belt, auxiliary belts, battery, levers, cables, radiators and the like), clean and re-lube if required. Renew the air filter, reassemble and keep praying. (It has nothing to do with fuel injectors - the perfectly airtight fuel circuit can get clogged by the debris from the fuel tank that makes it past the two fuel filters - very unlikely). Your car was engineered by pros and all built-in components (such as protection panels) have a purpose, so I'd advise against removing - it may cost you a fortune. hth

- simple fact - they don't work on injection systems in fact they cause the ecu to run a cold start program which enriches the fuel and wastes gas, if something as cheap and simple as an air filter increased power and gave better gas mileage don't you think the manufacturers would all fit them even as an option, also on lean burn engines the colder denser air would make the mixture even more lean leading to burnt plugs and valves, the ecu/maf/temperature sensor are all mapped together upsetting the balance would cause performance to deteriorate, the injection system squirts a measured amount of gas at each cycle so more or colder air would make no difference, unlike a carburetor which supplies gas continuously

- Keep in mind, your stock intake IS a cold air intake. All you're going to do with an aftermarket one is MARGINALLY increase the flow. At best, you're going to get 1-3 horsepower, regardless of what brand you get. People will tell you that it makes the car more powerful, but what is happening is a placebo effect. They know it has a new part, so they drive the car harder. Which makes it seem like it's performing better. It's really not. Get the exhaust too, if you want. Full headers, high flow cat, and catback, and you might get a whole total of around 10 whp. Also ignore anyone who says they got a 15-20 something gain from any of these parts. Ask them if they actually dynoed their vehicle afterward. They're just quoting what the advertisement told them.

- For the best answers, search on this site shorturl.im/awFgA A Cold Air Intake CAN improve both fuel economy and can increase HP by 15. -- BUT -- a cold air intake is not good for your car - untuned. You need to get it tuned properly for your ECU to know that it has a new denser air coming into the engine. If you don't get it tuned, you could be setting the timer for your engine to fail because it will make you run lean - meaning that your engine will put too little gas into the cylinders thus causing your engine to run hotter than usual.

- A nice low pitched thunderous sound comes from a source - a large V8 with big pipes and great mufflers. You want something that pretty much can't be imitated by a small V6 with catalytic converter. The air intake won't hurt - and it's placement on a Wrangler is high enough not to be a problem, as the makers think about the Jeep as an off road stream crossing machine, not a asphalt only street racer. But it won't get that sound. Basically, most modern upgrades are crossover - and many are not suitable or even functional improvements. Like 20 bling wheels on an Escalade, they don't help because the owner didn't install the huge brakes, upgrade the drivetrain to make them necessary, and drive it like boy racer in the neighborhood.That's because SUV's are basically not sports cars at all. Jeeps aren't muscle cars, and making it sound like one is a misapplicaton of aesthetics. To get that thunderous sound, buying and building a 450+ rear drive muscle machine would also get you the backup performance that goes with it. Otherwise, these things turn out sounding just like the Folger's cans on Neons you hear farting around.

KN kits are very expensive but also very save for your car.
