Q:Our house is currently covered in carpet. We have a dog who sheds and has occasional accidents in the carpet. I'm debating whether or not to switch to hardwood floors. I would like to to the floating because of cost. Does anyone have advice? Should I stick it out with carpet? Is wood that much easier?
We had an English Bulldog that shed. Shows up good on carpet. We installed a hardwood floor by ourselves and it was easier to clean. Couple of things to consider. A large dog will have a tendancy to scratch the surface after a while of the wood floor. Especially a cheap wood floor. Things like the fake wood with plastic on top last a couple of years. Also, older heavier dogs tend to slip and have trouble standing on the slick hardwood.
Q:I spilt vegetable oil on my carpet and I can't get it out.
Try cornmeal. Sprinkle it on heavily and leave for awhile. Vacumn it up.. If still have oil, repeat until all absorbed. Cornmeal will not stain or discolor the carpet. It is very absorbent and costs very little.
Q:What causes carpet around the edges to turn grey in a stairwell?
The technical term, as used by the carpet cleaning industry, is Filter Dirt. This term refers to soil/dust that has passed through the furnace duct work, and the furnace air filter, and has now attached it self to the carpet fibers. When this dust is circulating through the house, from the cold air return to the heat/air ducts, it picks up an electric charge which makes it difficult to remove from the carpet fibers. When it shows up on the edge of each step, it is thought that the dirt/soil is coming up from the under side of the steps, through the small crack in the wood base holding up the steps. Some people plagued with this problem, have replaced the carpet ,and prior to this, caulked the seams between the steps and the wall. You need to look at getting your air ducts professionally cleaned. They should be cleaned every 5 years, anyway. also, you may need to consider replacing your furnace air filter with a paper pleated style. Do not purchase the 3 for a dollar fiberglass style. The cheap filters have the ability to only trap golf balls and pop cans. They allow most soil and dirt to pass right on through the system. Change your furnace air filter every 4 months religiously. Use a black marker to write on the duct work near the furnace of your change out dates. This gives you a written filter change out record in an appropriate location. The carpet cleaning industry does have a solvent based product to help clean the filtration soil from the carpet. One is called Filter Out. from Pro's Choice. Sometimes the stains are permanent, as the soil while traveling between the air ducts is picking up cooking oils from the kitchen, making for a difficult oil/dust, electrically charged stain to remove. These stains are also found around furniture setting right on the floor, and under doors that remain closed. Hope I've given you some guidance to help deal with future filtration soil problems in your home. (3M makes the best paper pleated air funace filters)
Q:If I were to keep a horse turned out 24/7 in all seasons which rugs would I need?If possible, say where I could layer rugs to minimize buying loads of different kinds. Thanks in advance (:
A horse turned out 24/7 in all seasons never needs any rug. I have 57 years of keeping horses in climates that range from extremes of heat and humidity in summer to extremes of cold in winter to back up my opinions. My horses have been out in downpours and freezing rain, 40 below zero F wind chills, blizzards and flood conditions, tornado force winds, and anything else you can imagine. I do provide them with 24/7 hay all year round, and it does act as a furnace to maintain body heat through the cold spells. I once bought an Arab show horse who was always pampered like a sissy and stabled with limited turnout while being blanketed for everything for the years before I got him. I had him fully functioning outside with no blankets the first winter after I bought him. Amazingly, the various skin conditions his prior owners disclosed him to suffer from never manifested again after I bought him and kept the blankets off.....not one, never. Anyway, unless you have very good reason to blanket a horse that serves your purposes in training and riding the horse, there is no other reason to blanket. Horses already possess very effective bio-systems to handle being outdoors in all climates. We don't put big fluffy insulated boots on their hooves in winter, do we? How can those thin little hoof walls be enough to keep their little feet warm??
Q:the differences of pure cotton carpets and acrylic fiber carpets
The anti static performance of pure cotton is much better than that of acrylic synthetic fiber material, if carpet has serious electrostatic, it's uncomfortable to step on it. In addition, too much electrostatic is also easy to absorb grey swing Lei seal brown Fu chicken sweep alone preserved dust, which is very dirty. Of course, acrylic fiber carpet is cheaper. The fluffiness and elastic are better than pure cotton, it's soft to step on it.
Q:i have just rented a house and started to clean the rugs now smell a strong urine oder, can anyone tell me how to get rid of this fast.i tried boarax, backingsoda, vinager , peroxide, and nothing seems to help. i will give 30 points to someone if they help me remove this smell.
Try ODOBAN. It works great on my rugs... you can let it soak on the rug or if the rug is small enough you can throw it in the washer with some of the cleaner... =]
Q:Be shampooed like other carpets or does it have to be cleaned another way? My wife thinks it has to be steam cleaned.
Shampooing carpet is old terminology, dating to the 60's and 70's. The modern process HWE, hot water extraction is the process endorsed by all of the carpet mills today. Steam is another way to say hot water, as the carpet will steam when the door is partially open during cold weather, while the cleaning process takes place. Berber carpets most often are Olefin carpet, or also called polyproplene, can be hot water extracted with special attention towards the vacuum/extraction process. Any moisture left in the carpet will migrate/wick to the surface during the drying process, along with residual soil/dirt found deep in the carpet. These wick-ups will tend to stain the very top side of the carpet and they may have to be rinsed back off by the pro, providing they do not easily wipe off with a damp cloth. Many professional carpet cleaners would prefer not to clean Olefin, if they had a choice. Pro carpet cleaners prefer the more popular Nylon Carpets.
Q:Is the Circo Flower Rug - 48x70 from target dry clean only, or can you put it into the washing machine maybe like on permanent press or a special cycle like that?
I wouldn't put it in a regular washer because you will damage both. You can use one at the laundry mat. But on gentle, and cold water.
Q:I recently moved a couch and chair which was in the same position for 3 years on carpet. Any suggestions how to raise up the indent that is in the carpet. Thank you.
Try to dampen the area and then brush up with a hair brush. Having had your furniture in place for such a long time it's likely there will always be an indentation there. I've seen some, good quality carpets, recover if the pile is thick enough. Hope this helps in some way.
Q:Does anyone have a good recommendation for carpeting with someone who has a lot of pets? I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and want to get carpet in my home but not sure if it's best to get berber or shag or plush..... sigh, so many carpet choices! I currently have hardwood flooring but I'd prefer carpeting. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you.
Plush carpets are more comfortable but a berber will stand up to heavy traffic and abuse better. The other things you want to consider is color and texture. The more texture, the better it will hide traffic wear. Try to find something with multi color flecks, it will help to hide stains. No matter what carpet you choose pets can cause a lot of damage to it. Especially if they track in dirt and mud or if they pee or vomit on the carpet. Since you already have hardwood floors you might want to buy carpet and have it turned into an area rug. The flooring store where you buy it should be able to arrange for the carpet to be bound ( having a cloth strip stiched around the edges), and get you a protective underlayment to put between the hardwood and the rug. You can have the rug made to any shape and size you want. Since you won't have to pay for installation you save some money, you won't damage your wood floors and it'll be easier to change in the future.
