Q: I am redoing a room in my basement, and I discovered that the previous owners glued down almost every inch of the carpet. The plan right now is to replace that carpet with new carpet. We tried scrapping and pulling the carpet up...but the process is almost too slow to be worth it. Does anyone have any tips or any suggestions on how to get around this? We are open to doing a different kind of flooring as well.: Start in a corner by grabbing the carpet with the pliers. Gently pull back slowly, as to not tear through the carpet. Once the old carpeting is completely pulled out; set it aside for later. Use the scraper to remove the remaining dry carpet glue from the floor. Removing the glue is pretty simple, but there is a way to do the job right. There are many industrial solvents made specifically for this purpose. These products can be purchased at you local hardware store. These products are chemicals that contains solvents to dissolve the glue...read the directions on all chemical bottles prior to use.

Q: My mom has had a Karastan rug for 30 years now and it's in gorgeous condition and it has never once shed. It's also wool. I need to purchase one, but I don't like the old fashion designs on the Karastan rugs...does anyone know what other brand rug is equal to a Karastan rug that doesn't shed? I wish Karastan made more modern rugs in wool.: Most new wool rugs will shed as that is there nature. The saleslady is correct in her assumption to a certain degree. Depending on your vacuum cleaner, it could take less than 3 months or it could even take longer. The main thing is not to worry, as there will not be any significant loss of overall weight due to the shedding. Also, if you have pets, keep an eye on them as they will often times mark a wool rug, sometimes on numerous occassions as they sense a competitive animal near by. If you do not have pets your self, be cautious of visiting pets as they will also mark the rug.(when pets mark a rug they use urine).

Q: I would like to have it completely carpeted from wall to wall. How much will it cost me to buy the carpeting and have it installed professionally?: If your planning on doing the whole house at once, your best bet in to go to one of the large chain stores. They will come out and professional measure it for free. I can tell you It's not going to be cheap. you are looking at around 200 yards. A medium grade carpet where I'm from goes for about $10-15 a yard. That does not include pad. Don't go with a real cheap carpet it just won't last. A basic way to tell the quality is to look at the height of the nap and then spread it apart with your fingers. If there is a lot of space in between the carpet fibers its a lower quality.

Q: I recently moved in with my boyfriend but I told him I'd only move in if he put a carpet down because we have a 10 month old son who does not want to sit still. It's been a couple months and everytime I bring it up he dismisses it. I don't want to wait any longer. I will pay for it and he already said he knows how to put it down. The floor is completely bare...it's not hard wood flooring but the wood that's underneath the carpet it comes with. It has staples to hold down the wood and all along the edges are those sharp nail things. He said that we need something additional to put between the wood floor and the carpet that makes the carpet soft or something. Q: my carpets are very dirty.: Professional cleaners have better equipment and will do a little better job (generally). If you do it yourself, you will save a lot of money, and it will be just about as good as a professional if you follow the directions. You might try doing it yourself, and if it is still dirty, hire a professional.

Q: I need to clean my sage green carpet.....they look bad. Does the Rug Doctor work? How much does it cost? Does it make the carpet very wet? Would it be best IF I do get it to use it when I can have windows and doors open so it would air out? I really wanna clean my carpet because it is driving me crazy. If the Rug Doctor doesn't work could you tell me one that will?? Thanks a lot ppl.: I have used them many years ago before I bought my own steam cleaner. They are fine and not all that expensive. Like any steam cleaner it applies soap and water and then sucks it out of the carpet leaving the carpet damp not wet. No you don't have to leave windows open. When it is done the carpet is barely even damp if done right. I much prefer my own steam cleaner or at times hiring Stanley Steemer for a whole house job. But the rentals work fine for the money. They also offer upholstery cleaner so it's a great way to clean your furniture at the same time.

Q: I have a espresso colored round table (i think its about 4' or 5' diameter) and it also incleds a leaf to extend the table into an oval shape. I am trying to decide what kind of rug i should get for underneath the table (there is ceramic tile in this area). Its going into the formal living and dining room in the house which is the first you room you enter when you come into the house. The entire room is about 13' wide by 22' long. There will also be a buffet by the table taking off about 2' or so from the width. Q: My cat is 2 1/2 yrs old and I've had him since he was 6 months old. Within this past couple of months he started pooping for some reason on one of my kitchen rugs. I've tried everything to correct this. I've used Nature's Miracle, Vinegar, other pet odor removers, put food in the spot so he would avoid the area, and not only changed litters but changed to scoopable. NOTHING has helped!! At first changing the litters seem to help and I scooped it out every couple of days. My only other choice is to scoop it out every day and/or put him in a cage for a week all day long with his own litter to try and break the habit. Other than that I feel I've run out of options! HELP...I'm at my wits end!!!: You need to take your kitten to the vet. Cats will stop using a litter box if they have any kind of infection because it hurts to go to the bathroom and they associate the box with the pain. Their thinking is if they go somewhere else, they won't have pain because they figure the box is somehow hurting them. Any time a cat goes to the bathroom outside the box on a regular basis, the first step is seeing the vet to rule out any sickness/infection. If it's not an illness, your vet can offer suggestions to correct the behavioural issue.

Q: Our guestroom has some old carpeting that we want to replace with new carpeting. Thanks!: Most people don't remove the old tack strips, however the old ones depending on how long they've been in place, can sometimes be worn. The wood can get a little weak or the tacks themselves may not hold the new carpet in place depending on the type of backing on the new carpet. You may also want to consider removing the old padding simply because of the amount of dirt and liquids that may have been absorbed over the years. When it comes down to it, it's about how much you can budget to the project.
