- Q:I have a small living room and have been trying to find suitable furniture that is not too overstuffed/big. The other issue is that the door is 30-31 inches wide and most furniture heights and depths are bigger than this. I have looked at Ikea's products and I'm considering the Karlstad loveseat or the new Sater sofa, which is a 2.5 seat leather sofa. Is Ikea furniture comfortable and durable. How good is the leather? How well does the furniture age? I don't want it looking shabby after a short while. Any other suggestions, and before you say it :), I already browse Craigslist, the local thrift store and Overstock, no luck yet. Suggestions welcome. Thanks

- Q:I sanded down the wood on the sofa and started painting and now parts of the wood along the sides have turned PINK!!! That won't do at all! I've painted over it over and over putting layers on and it just keeps turning pink! I have no idea what to do! I need it to be white, not pink!! Please help!
- It being an older sofa I take it. The older type varnish and stain will come through the paint. You can get around this by painting it first with Kilz paint or primer. You won't have to sand and scrape. Just paint. The primer is the better choice and it comes in white.
- Q:I have 2 small children and 2 cats. The cats (whom I have not declawed because they are indoor/outdoor), have tore up each corner of both my sofa loveseat while using them as a scratching post. There have also been a few accidents while changing my baby's diapers on the sofa. So I pan to get them cleaned and then slipcover them both. But there are a few styles of clipcovers ~ snug/hug fit, relaxed fit that hangs, and then a combo of both. I have noticed that the combo fit (the latest style) is most attractive. The problem here is that the snug area of this cover is on the exact spots that my cats used to scratch. I am thinking that they will be able to get their claws into this as well. And if they can, they will as they have done the same to every corner of every mattress in the house. So lets say I go for the relaxed fit, is there any suggestions of what I should look for? Any problems with certain ones? Am I wrong about the snug fit being a continual issue with the cats? Thanx!
- I like the stretch kind. They fit so much better. The cats are another problem. We just lost our 23 year old last month. You will have to retrain them. I used clear packing tape on the corners. She didn't like the feel. Matter of fact she found another piece to scratch. More tape. Good luck!
- Q:I have an off-white microfiber sofa, and the cushions are getting dirty. They unzip so I can machine wash them, but I don't know the settings, or if I need to use some kind of special gentle soap. Also, can I use the spray stain remover beforehand? There are some spots that I'm extra worried about. Thanks in advance!
- My experience has been they shrunk and faded. They didn't go back on without ripping, and the color didn't match the body of the sofa.
- Q:I want to know how high your end table needs to be in relation to your sofa. Also what are the appropriate heights for the coffee table and console table in relation to the sofa height. I know it has something to do with the seat height and the arm height. THanks!
- You want your end table to be slightly below the arm of your sofa. If it's higher it can cause some problems. For instance, you don't want to set a drink on the end table and have it tip over only to spill all of the contents right over the arm and into the cushions. And you definitely don't want it so low that you can't reach it from a sitting position. You don't want to have to lean over the sofa arm just to reach your coffee or latest issue of EGM. Also take into consideration the light from the lamp on your end table. You don't want the table so low or so hight that you can see the bare bulb. So you want your end table to be a comfortable height. A height that allows easy access but won't allow for disaster increase (such as a spilling liquid). And a height that will prevent temporary blindness from a bright, lamp bulb.
- Q:I have one of those crappy ikea beds with the pine slats that hold up the single mattress. Instead of tossing it, I would like to convert it into a sofa. If I can chop it up and make it work it would be a fun and rewarding project. Any plans or suggestions would be great. Thanks my people!
- mrriskey007 Great idea. Most of the work is already done. Chop it so that you have the correct porportion back to seat. Move the back's legs to the position for the seat's rear legs. Consider adding a middle set of legs. Obtain a new spar that will run the sofa's length and it will be the seat's rear frame. Install, maybe, the middle leg to it. The back's connection to the seat's rear might be as simple as a 1/2 thick piece of plywood used as a gusset. Picture a 45 degree x 90 degree triangle with the short leg fastened to the seat rear and the long leg fastened to the back. Size the triangle for best strength. Adjust the 90 degree angle for the best back to seat angle. Glue and screw seat frame to gusset as well as the back. Gusset will also help to contain seat's cushions. Will need two of these, one for each end of the sofa (duh). Might consider one for the center for additional strength of the the back to seat (plus the middle leg if needed). Whalla -- done. Sofa arm rests at its ends are simple to add too. Select a piece of stock that will be the sofa's seat front leg extention as an upright for the front of the arm rest. Select stock for horizontal part of the arm. Consider using a gusset to connect those to pieces. Connect the arm to the rear of the sofa which is the back frame. - Wait until it starts raining and leave them in your yard. after it stops raining, let them dry overnight. if they are still not clean, try using your bathtub. sofa pillows make a great head rest for the bath, and they get cleaned too!
- Q:I have just bought a new house with a terracotta carpet in lounge and I desperately want red leather sofas - will this match??? See, I kinda like the terracotta, but am committed to my red sofas. Maybe if i painted the 2 walls red and 2 walls terracotta? or burnt sienna? maybe a little mustard trim for the windows and skirting boards? - Too much!!!! First see if you can find some throw pillows with both colors to help bring it together. If not, replace the carpet.
