- Q: We already have a fabric (slate blue color) recliner that is only about 6 yrs old, perfect condition that we have no intention (at this time) of replacing.With this new tax refund MAYBE coming this summer ($2100 WHOOOO HOOOO) I would like to replace our sofa/love seat. We have never had our own and this one is shot. I haven't told my husband of my desire yet but I figure if we spend 1/2 and save 1/2 on something we are putting into the house :) Anyway. Since our recliner is staying and it's fabric, we should probably not even look at leater as it wouldn't go. Correct? Or is mixing pieces ok? I'm not sure about leather w/ little ones either. Does the soft plushy type of leater scratch easily? Also..if we went w/ fabric, we should probably go w/ the slate blue color as close to the recliner as possible, yes? Or would going w/ a tan/darker tan/khaki color not look right? Our carpet is tan.
- You could get leather, as leather will go with anything. However, there are a lot of styles and qualities of leather sofas. If you have a lot of kids and pets, I would wait on the leather. Go to a furniture store and look at what they have. Most stores have a designers section where you can check out fabric samples. I would suggest getting a durable fabric with a high # rating that will last for years and... get one that is in a print with lots of different colors (easier to hide spills and stains).
- Q: What gets the smell of vomit out of sofa cushions?
- The smell is not going to come out unless you clean that coushion really good you dont want to just cover the smell you want to like disinfect it. Which is a good way to start like that kitchen floor cleaner. I think it is Lestoil very potent stuff and it will clean it good.

- Q: I bought a bright red IKEA fabric sofa. I want to make sure the color doesn't start to fade away. The fabric is a cover that i can remove and wash but i am afraid the color will start to fade. Any suggestions? How to keep the red bright.
- Well while it is on your sofa get some scotch brite in the red can and spray it , it will protect it from stains and fading as well . My mother bought a red sofa 4 years ago and to this day it still looks new and she just always uses the scotch brite on it , and every so often she has to do it again but it is so worth it Also when you wash the cover always wash it in cold water with wool lite or a mild detergent , and dry it on the air dry setting , and it should keep its color .
- Q: I have a sofa with pillows, but I want to put different designs on the pillows. Maybe new materials. How do I go about making new pillow covers for the pillows on the sofa. Its about 8 big pillows and two small ones.
- This is actually not that hard. I've recovered a lot of sofa cushions. Most pillow covers on sofas zip off. Unzip each cover and take out the stuffing. Turn the pillow cover inside out. Then take a tape measure or ruler and measure the size of each of the pieces of fabric that are sewed together. Draw a sketch of each piece, with the measurements. Add about 1/2 to 1 around each edge for the sewing seam. Once you've got all of the pieces written down, figure out how much fabric you will need by making a diagram of all of the pieces. Most upholstery fabric is about 54 to 60 wide. It can be very expensive but there are a lot of discount places that sell remnants. Be sure to buy zippers in the right length or a little bit longer than the old zippers. After you buy the fabric, you can either layout the pieces to cut from the measurements on the sketches or just lay an inside out old cover on the fabric, pin it down and cut around it. Sew the zippers into the side pieces just like the original covers. Sew the tops and bottoms of the pillows to the narrow side strip piece. Be careful to make the corners line up. If you go to a sewing and fabric store, most of the major dress pattern companies also sell patterns with instructions for making slipcovers, which can be helpful. The salespeople who work at such stores can usually help you out a lot with measuring and with instructions, too. By the way, if you get washable fabric and want to be able to launder the covers, be sure to machine wash and dry the fabric BEFORE you cut it and make the covers.

- It depends what your decor is and where you are putting it. The second one is classier (and my favorite). The first one would be good in a game room or room where a lot of people will sit and watch tv/etc. It looks a little more casual though.
- Q: I have a few spots on my new sofa and was just wondering how to look after leather sofas?
- Try scrubbing the stains with shaving cream. Then wipe with a clean wet cloth. Shaving cream is nothing but whipped soap that rinses off easily. The last thing you want to use on your sofa is overly sudsy soap. You'll never get the suds out. Any brand of shaving cream works, as long as it's the typical white foamy kind. The gels don't work. -
- Q: At our house, the litter box reeks because nobody will empty it. There are always fresh stains on the curtains sofa from territory marking, not to mention the moldy Kibble ground into the carpet at every feeding. I can't imagine how it could be worse - unless, of course, we had pets...
