It's hard to tell the quality of the foam, but if you can sit on the thing before buying it you can get a good idea. Just remember as a general rule the furniture Walmart carries isn't going to be around 20-100+ years from now. It's what lots of people refer to as throw-a-way furniture.

Q: we have these leather chairs in my kitchen and my cat always jumps on the back of this one to get on top of our water cooler cause she likes it up there or whateveranyone know what i could do to like make her stop, cause i have a pillow case over it right now, but that defeats the purpose of having a nice leather chair: Teaching a cat not to scratch or jump on the kitchen counter is different from trying to teach a cat not to use something as a stepping stool to get from point A to point B. Anything you do will defeat the purpose unless you teach the cat to not get on the water cooler OR provide the cat with something else to step on. Cats generally know and understand when they are doing something wrong because they will do it on purpose if you are in the room. Like if a cat knows they are not allowed to scratch on the rug, they will act like they are going to do it just so you will come and pay attention to them (our cats do this all the time). You can do a spray bottle to keep the cat from jumping on the cooler since you do not want to put anything on your nice chairs. Spray bottles with water work remarkably well because most cats hate it. We also use an air can duster and puff it into the air because the noise scares them. We had a cat that was jumping on our antique piano as a means of getting onto the built in book shelf that had nothing on it. After the spray bottle worked at getting her off the piano, she decided to just use the front of the book case as a set of stairs to get to the top shelf - which was a disaster. We had to spray bottle for like a whole month to rid the cat of both the piano and the shelf. We also got her her own little shelf in the window so she would not try to get up there anymore.

My parents taught me long ago to get nice things, keep them a long time and spend the money once. You'll be happier and it is less expensive in the long run. That said, price can be indicative of quality, but it is never a MEASURE of quality. A $60 chair probably won't fit well or last long. A $500 dollar chair is a rip off or some art-deco thing that doesn't aid your comfort any. Shop around and you'll find something.

Q: I'm trying to earn some brownie points with my wife after making her angry, so I decided to fix her antique rocking chair that belonged to her grandmother. Initially, just the arm was broken (really loose and would get knocked off really easily.) I sat down on the chair to get a closer look and the entire thing collapsed. Your rocking chairs sound fantastic, and protecting the wood is a great way to make sure that they last for generations! There are lots of ways to go about protecting the surface; however most will change the color of the wood even if only slightly. Tung and linseed oil will waterproof the surface of the wood and help to protect it from rot; but oiling the wood will darken the grain of the wood, the amount of darkening will vary depending on the type of oil used. In order to keep your wood the same color I would suggest using a spray-on polyurethane top coat. If the chairs will be outside, or in direct sunlight you may want to choose a Spar Polyurethane, which is designed to resist the elements. These finishes are available in either high gloss or satin. High Gloss will make the wood look like it is wet and shiny. The satin will give the wood a more natural look, but will still give the wood a slightly more reflective finish than bare wood. Regardless of what finish you choose I would really suggest testing it on another piece of pine before you take the plunge and shoot both of the chairs. If you choose to spray the chairs with Polyurethane be sure to apply multiple thin coats, to avoid running.
