Q: I just moved in a new houseshare and my housemates don't seem very hygienic.The first thing I noticed is that they had kept all the kitchen dishes such as oven dish and cake tins in a cupboard stuffed with the sofa covers, that smell like they have been in there for a very long timeIs it still safe to use all these dishes or could they be tinted with mould?: I would take all items out of the cupboards and if you have a dish washer use that if not use hot soapy water with a little bleach in it . you need to wash the cupboards out inside as well keep other items out of the kitchen except what you use in there.

A sleeper sofa in fact ! If you can drive to a resort area where people have beach condos, you will find a lot of second hand shops and thrift stores. People who own beach rental condos tend to change out the interiors quite often and there are good deals to be had. Also ck Craigs List for your local. Just do a search. Now that said, I am putting a link to a lot of good online sources for new sofas. I ordered a baby blue leather sofa from one of them on the list and got great customer service. And a great price. Check the clearance tabs. And it never hurts to pick up the phone and call an online store and make an offer. They might bargain a bit. I did that for two antique armories from a seller on eBay and he accepted my offer immediately...I was shocked.

Q: I just purchased a grey sofa. In our living area, it looks green! We have greyish tan walls which we will probably change. The first thing I wanted to look at in our room though is the lighting. In the afternoon when light is coming in, the sofa looks charcoal grey like it is supposed to. This is our den/basement and we have fluorescent lighting. I was wondering what color of lighting should we go with to tone down the green in the grey? I looked online and they have full spectrum, cool white and warm white. Our current bulbs don't say whether they are cool,warm or full spectrum. Thanks!: If you look at the spectral output of a cool white vs warm white emitter ....There is more blue/ green in the cool white and more red/yellow in the warm. Hook up a few table lamps with Normal incandescents and you will see what your eye will see with a full spectrum light on the color of the couch. Remember that light is also bouncing off your walls. Full spectrum are more expensive but will mimic the sunlight most closely. Ok more of an explanation check your current bulb..Warm White will say 2700-3000K. Cool White from 3500K-4000K. Daylight will be 5000K. Aquarium will be full spectrum or in the 6000K range. Walmart has a GE sunshine tube (in the orange cardboard sleeve) that is a relatively cheap full spectrum bulb.

Q: I have a twin bed with a trundle underneath for a spare room. The room will primarily serve as an office and I would like to make the twin bed look more sofa-like unless I'm using for company.Any ideas on what kinds of pillows to use on a twin bed (the frame is black but you can barely see it - it has no decorative metal or wood or anything) to turn it into a sofa?: This is a very easy challenge. Go to any fabric store and look at the selection of apolstery fabric that they have there. Pick out what you like. Take a FITTED sheet that fits the bed with you to the fabric store. That is the measurement you will use to know how much fabric to buy. (Add a four inches around the edge for a seam allowance. This means that you will have tuck some of the edges under to make the edges look clean and finished.) Use the fitted sheet as a pattern to sew the mattress cover. This way it will just be a 'cap' over the bed that is removeable if you want to take it off and use it as a bed again later. Get the clips that hook onto the corners of the mattress to keep it from slipping off the corners. Attach them and leave them on the mattress cap to keep the apolostery from slipping as people sit on the couch. For the pillows.... the challenge is going to be to make them big enough that they will take up most of the room at the back of the couch. You can cover them in the same apolstery fabric as the mattress cap....or just use coordinating covers. I suggest that you just make envelope slip covers for the pillows big enough to fit two bed pillows inside. Basically, you just lay out the fabric, wrong side out, enough to cover the two pillows front and back with about nine extra inches to overlap. This creates a pocket. Leave the pocket open but sew up the sides. Then you just stuff a couple bed pillows inside back to back to get the bulk you want. Decorate as you desire.
