- Q:I am connecting a humidstat to furnace. I would normally use furnace/thermostat wire for this purpose except that I need 8 conductors and the largest furnace/thermostat wire seems to be 5 conductors. I would like to use another 18guage 8 conductor wire but not sure if there are any specifications I need to ensure it meets before I can use it inside furnace cabinet.
- Standard 18 gauge wire is all you need, they do make it in 8 and 10 conductor, it just takes a little calling around to supply houses to find it. There's is nothing special about the wire specs for thermostat wire as it relates to your furnace so long as you use 18 gauge standed or solid wire. The only exception for thermostat wire is when you get into commercial buildings with an open plenum return air system, any wire used in the plenum cavity must be plenum-rated, which is almost always much more expensive.

- good luck with that.. i put a new head-unit in an old pontiac firebird.. none of the colors matched the stero harness.. the cars were all browns and whites and strange colors you dont usually see... i ended up using a volt meter to find what was power and ground and all that.. then just trial and error for the speaker wires- what was front and rear.. and right and left. just messed around for about an hour til it worked. no internet access at the time... probably would have been helpful....

- with lights you can have many things going on and the colors may not be indicitive to what wire it is. Especially if there is more than one switch or light. So you really have to know what is going on. It sounds to me like you have more than one switch. This means those white wires that were bundled together have to stay together. you should have someone else flick the switches. Look up switch leg on google, and you will see various ways this is done.
- Q:I would like to know how to wire my West Marine VHF Radio.Coming out the back of the radio is a red wire, a white wire, and two black wires. The white wire and one of the black wires are a thinner gauge then the other black and red wires. Any solutions out there? Thanks
- I would say the red wire is your power 12 V + side, The bigger black one would be you ground or - side , and the remaining two wires are for the speeker

- Hi, look for oxigen free copper wire, that is UWG certified first off. Then shielding comes into play and then wire twist and then wire strand count. Tsunami, rockford fosgate are pretty common so start there first.

- The insulation around the wire prevents the flow of current between wires, (shorting out the coil). It has no effect on the magnetic field created by the flow of current in the wires. - What kind of car is it? That's important, especially if it's a foreign make because those wires are so weird colored. Typically, yellow or ornage is power, red is memory, and the purple, gray, white, green wires are for the speakers .Black or brown wires are ground. Any blue wires you might come across are mainly just auxiliary signal wires that go to an aftermarket amp and subwoofer setup. Unless you have something like that, those wires can be taped off and forgotten about. Also, when wiring an aftermarket radio to your car, you will need to purchase an adapter harness that plugs into the stock wiring of the car and the wires connect to the radio wire harness correspondingly. I suggest soldering all the necessary wires and sealing them with shrink tube. It's the most solid, most sure way of a good connection without the worry of shorts and disconnections.
