Q: I bought a single pole dimmer switch to install in my dining room and when I took the old switch out nothing looked right. There are two wires which were joined together by another single wire which was attached to the top screw. There was another single wire (I believe the ground wire) attached to the bottom screw. I disconnected the first two wires and attached them separately to the black wires on the dimmer and attached the ground wires together. It didn't work. I've tired several different times with no luck. I put the wires back the way they were and attached them to the old switch and they no longer work ether. Help! How can I fix this problem? The old wires appear to be a very thick copper covered in black plastic and cloth.....
The 'answerer' Justin K thinks you have knob and tube wiring. A lot of early electrical installations were done in the old days with out a ground, many types of early 'romex' did not include a ground. You may or may not have 'knob and tube' wiring - but it really dose not matter. The two wires which were joined together and had a third wire attached are the hot wires. The other wire (lower screw terminal) is the 'load' wire - it goes out to your light fixture. The reason the those 2 wires were attached together is that one of them is hot, and the other wire is a 'feed' to supply power to your next switch or receptacle. I am an electrical contractor, this is how I would fix the problem - I'm not suggesting that you do it though. #1 turn the breaker/fuse back on. #2 use a voltage tester to determine which wire is now hot. #3 touch the hot wire to the other wires 1 at a time. The hot wire when it is touching the 'load' wire will turn on the lighting fixture. Mark the 'load' wire with some black electrical tape. #4 turn the power back off #5 attach the marked 'load' wire to one of the switch terminals. #6 take the other 2 wires (incoming power, and the out going power) and join them together with a third wire ---LIKE IT WAS ORIGINALLY. Place that third onto the other terminal of the switch. it dose not mater which terminals you use - it will work just fine.
Q: Hi,I'm trying to connect a Panasonic CQ RDP200-LEN car radio. Normally, there is red and yellow wire for ignition and constant, and a black wire for ground. However, this unit has 2 yellow wires,2 black wires and a red. Where do these wires go? thanks
Honest answer is to take it to a audio specialist. finding and wiring a stereo from scratch (termed hardwiring) is a hard job even for the most advanced audio specialist. This is speaking from experience. Most wires are not colour coded and you will need a amp meter to measure the current, voltage, continuity and resistance in order to find out what wire does what. One wrong wire could mean new speakers or in the worst case set fire to your car. I've have done hardwires for over 5 years, and I've seen some real mess, which quite possibly could have been avoided for a few quid but impatience and inexperience has lead to new cables, trim and other pieces which were damaged due to bad installations. Please be careful!! added 9/11/06: (Note To other answeres) Don't use Choc connections or block connectors for wiring stereos as these are open connections with exposed areas of metal if they came into contact with earthed chassis they can cause a short try using bullet style or butt connectors they are more secure and sheilded!
Q: What method can be used to detect residual impurities and metal particles on the wire surface?
Remove metal surface impurities, refers to the removal of metal surface attached substances, such as cement, paint, spots and other materials that do not belong to the material itself.
Q: i got a fi bl 15dual 2 subwoofer. im wiring it down to 1 ohm.now for the problem. lets say im wiring the positive terminals together. am i suppose to wire it all with positive wire or can i also use negative copper wire? i used two positive wires and one negative wire to hook up the three positive terminals. is this bad? do i need to make all of them positive silver wires?
Wire is just wire. It alone does not know positive from negative. However, some great problems could lie below the surface. It really depends on what is on the other end of the wire. There may be some problems associated with not following a good wiring practice such as: Creating a short circuit and blowing the amp Putting one of the two speakers out of polarity with the other resulting in lower or no acoustical output. The best practice is to ALWAYS relate the positive or PLUS terminal with the wire with the same designation with the speaker terminal. That way, if you have to do any trouble shooting, you can trace is back and know without a doubt what is connected to what.
Q: Which internet is faster and quality?
Use both. Wire up a couple of locations you use most of the time and set up wireless for when you want to move around or your buddy brings his/her computer over. There are wireless routers that also have wired ports to connect to. Switch off the wireless when you don't need it or aren't using it.
Q: Is there a Martial Arts / Fighting style that uses wires or whats the practices that uses wires called?
Are we talking hollywood or like uses wires to cut things like in anime? THe hollywood use of wires to lift and move fighters is referred to as wire fu and it is used in most modern martial arts movies, especially in china. The other one, the idea that you can use wires to slice and dice people is fictional. The wires would be far to hard to control effectively and would be able to cause that much damage. They just look cool for the show.
Q: does bigger power, ground, speaker wires give more power 2 the amplifier?
Yes for the power and ground wires. no for the speaker wires. bigger speaker wires gives the speakers better sound. and for thepower and ground wires it doesnt really give the amp more power, it gives the amp better current so a better sound since the wires have less resistance. it will help your amps give the full potential they can deliver.
Q: How do I wire this ceiling fan? There are two house wires coming from ceiling-one white, one black. There are three wires on the fan- one white, one solid black, and one black with a white stripe. There is one light switch in the room that will be operating the fan/light (the fan has a light on it). I wired the white wire to the white wire, the black wire with the white stripe to the black wire, didn't know where to wire the solid black wire to. Now only the light part of the fan works, the fan does not work at all. Where does the solid black wire go? I need both the fan and the light to work.
Simple ------- wire-nut the 2 white wires together then wire-nut the solid black(from the house side)to both the black wire and black wire with white trace together. In many ceiling fans they use a blue wire for the fan light, but it appears they are using the black wire /with white trace for the fan light in this case.
Q: ok i have 3 questions...i have a oldsmobile cutlas supreme and i have a 0 gauge power wire that is 17 feet is that long enough???? and i have 0 gauge ground that is 17 feet is that long enough....and about the speaker wire..i have 8 gauge speaker wire that is 25 feet..is this a good setup.make sure u answer all these questions please thank you..
8-10 awg could be extra desirable than sufficient for floor. Make a sturdy floor... run it removed from any the +ve and speaker wires... and make confident the bare metallic on the physique artwork is advantageous and clean... this could make each and all the version as you may understand between stable sound and a relentless humming on your audio gadget... sixteen-22 awg for audio gadget reckoning on your determination and producer suggestions. IMHO the audio gadget purely desire a sign and the decrease gauge does not make a great difference. in certainty a speaker run on 4 awg can sound worse than an 8 awg... however the right way is to fulfill a million/2 way and characteristic sixteen-22 awg. The lighter twine additionally ability you shop cable weight.
Q: The wire on my headphones were cut clean off in the middle of the wire. Is there any way it can be fixed? I tried to find out other ways but it seems one of the only ways is to strip the wire of its covering. Is there a way to fix it without burning the wires?
I totally agree with Mr. Smith. However, I would use heat shrink tubing for a neater look than the tape.
