Q: I am just starting to get back into horses again after about 5 years and at the moment i am looking after a friends horse while she is away on holiday.. feeding them etc.one of her hoses has an unwaterproof rug. I asked her if it rains hard, should i take the rug off to dry, if i didnt get the chance to put the waterproof rug on (the waterproof one, can only go ontop of the unwaterproof one lol)She said don't worry about it, it will dry on the horse.Well it rained really heavy over night and has been raining on and off today, i am wanting to put the waterproof rug on when i feed them dinner, but i am just wondering if i should put the waterproof one over top of the already wet unwaterproof one... if that makes any sense??: My inclination is to take the rug off and give it a chance to dry as well as to allow the horses coat to air out and dry. The heat generated from the horses body will eventually dry the rug, but will have a difficult time. After the rug and horses are dry, then you can properly put the rug on and then the waterproof topping on. Good luck. Janet

Show horses need short coats, the warmth of the blanket takes away the nee for a horse to grow long hair to stay warm. Also, some people do it to keep the horse clean, from laying down and from dust. Q: I purchased an old wool, floral patterned, pile area rug (approx. 8' x 10') at an auction. It needs cleaned and there is not a professional cleaner in my area. Can I clean it with a traditional steam cleaner using cold water? If so, what about the beater bar? Do I need to diconnect that so I don't fuzz the wool? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!: Since you don't have a cleaning service in your area;I would recomend taking it to laundry mat that has commerical washers and add 1/2 cup woolite and wash on the lowest setting and then take home and place over railing or flat surface and let air dry. I do this with my Oriental area rugs. If a laundry mat is unavailable; use the recomendation above in your bath tub; squeezing gently after your drain tub and then palce over railing or place on flat surface.

Where would be the best place to look?.: That is not a standard rug size and I doubt you will find one … good luck looking! ;) OR ~ You can go to a carpet store and ask to look at remnants – when you find something you like they can trim it to the size you need and bind it for you – so the edges are nest. It will cost about $2 a liner foot to bind and remnants are inexpensive… so the “custom” rug will cost you maybe $100 – $200 tops - possibly more if you chose high end carpeting…
