Q:“I may call a chair, ‘a chair’ and someone may call it ‘a bed.’ Who can say who is right? We’re both right.” What’s wrong with this claim? What’s right about the claim?I really dont understand what could be wrong or right about the claim...if you could help me understand it that would be great! Maybe some of examples of philosophers that could help me understand this claim like Kant i guess. im not to clear on all this.Thanks in advance!: Nietzsche would say (I think he would say this but I haven't done that much study yet; just starting) that all supposed truths are in fact metaphors. The use of a name for an object we see is a metaphor; thus different metaphors can be used to describe the same object. Truths are metaphors since we are using something else to describe an object (as opposed to simply waving the chair in air). The problem is that we have forgotten that names are in fact all metaphors, and take them to be truths. Nietzsche uses the example of a leaf, in that no one leaf is the same as the other, yet we call them all leaves. Thus they are both right; however society would see the person who calls the chair a bed as a liar, even though the truth itself doesn't exist since its simply a metaphor. I'm just sort of guessing this because we're just starting to read Nietzsche but hopefully this will be somewhat helpful.

Q:My wife and I are putting chair rail in various places of our new home. We have seen a few pictures of rooms in magazines in which the chair rail was quite a bit higher (for instance, about 5 feet up on an 8 foot ceiling) than usual and liked the way it looked. My dad told us that we probably shouldn't do this. Anyone have any opinions?: Some older homes do have very high chair rails or what are sometimes called dados or wainscoting capped with chair rails. Sometimes they have ledges for hanging pictures or for resting plates and platters, too. Especially in Europe where you see it a lot more than in the states, chair rails or wainscoting will be higher on the wall because the ceilings are so much higher and they are intended to be in proportion with the height of the ceiling and also to make the room more cozy.

It would be nice to have a chair that has adjustable lumbar support, the kind made out of the microfoam like the new mattresses that have been recently marketed - you know the kind that conform to your body. This way if the back of the chair is adjusted to support your upper back, the lumbar is not over looked. Currently, I have only seen office chairs that support one or the other but not both at the same time. Also, current markets have chairs that massage or vibrate. These are extremely costly and who wants to plug in their chair to an electical outlet or recharge its batteries. I am thinking that if there were a way to create a warming or cooling sensation this might assist with the blood circulation and may be relaxing too. Just a thought. Hope this helps.

Q:My boyfriend and I were laying on the recliner chair one night and we went all the way back on it and when we were trying to put the foot rest part down, I had to force it down with my hands. Now I notice that I can't use the handle on the side to put the foot rest down. How can I fix this without sending it to a furniture repair store. Everything seems fin except that. And I can tell it has something to do with the handle.: What you explained sounds like a bent mechanism. Tip the chair over on it's back. Now underneath is a scissor action that folds up when you put the foot rest down. Pull the foot rest all the way out. Look for any bends between the the rivotted sections. They generally all should be straight. If you find a bent part straighten it. If it's bent it will be catching against each other. Should'nt be the handle because it's attached by a bar that operates the mechanism. Check to see if the chair sits level. The screws that hold the mechanism to the chair might have been pulled out of the chair itself. Look for screws on the floor. Or check to see nothings jammed up in the mechanism. I,m not trying to be a smart A but they are only made for one person. Get on the sofa next time. lol

Q:I'm going to Ober Gatlinburg in a week with my church group. I am really afraid of heights.
