Q:i had the chair removed frm fireplace 2 have a gasfire fitted........now we wish 2 reopen fire and go bck 2 the real thing........i need 2 no how do i go bout getting the chair replaced and who do u go 2 , 2 fit it back as i can not remba who took it out as it was 18yrs go: The term 'chair' regarding a fireplace is new to me, and I don't know where you are from. In the US, look up 'fireplaces' (or possibly chimneys) in the yellow pages. Real fireplaces--made of firebrick, not an insert--are a lost art, so a typical bricklayer (mason) may not know how to do them.

Q:I purchased a upholstered, swivel, rocker from Goodwill. The problem is, it sits too low. I avoid sitting in it because it's a real chore to get out of it! I've tried spinning the four legged base like an office chair. I can't think of anything to prop it up with that will look nice and keep it functional. Does anyone know of an inexpensive method of heightening the base?: Try buying a chair cushion. The cushion would make the chair more comfortable. Also it might increase the height of the chair based on the thickness of the cushion. Chair cushions don't cost much if you don't get the really fancy ones. But don't buy one if the chair is really small, because it won't help much. If the chair is too small to heighten with a chair cushion, take the chair to a wood shop or to a place like that. Tell them the details of the chair's base and and legs. Then if should be fixed.

Q:Given a weight and the angle of the legs, how do I calculate how much force each leg of a chair supports?I'm kinda-sorta sure of how to do this problem in 2D, but I have no idea how to do it in 3D.: Assuming that each leg is identical and positioned at equal distances to each other, they should each support an equal fraction of the total weight, unless the weight isn't being put on the chair equally. e.g. if a four-legged chair, with legs peripendicular to the floor, has to support 100lb, each leg should support 25lb each. If the legs are at an angle, just use the leg as the hypotenuse of a right trangle, the 25lb as one side of the angle, and use trigonometry to find the force (length) of the hypotenuse.

Q:My cat is getting hair all over the white chair she is clawing the chair aii up.: First of all please, please do not listen to anyone telling you to declaw her front feet. Its a horribly painful remedy which is banned in many countries including England. There are however ways around this situation. Cats hat the smell of citrus (oranges, grapefruit) if you have an orange scented airspray, spray the chair in areas you don't see like the bottom. If you wanted to you can cut up oranges and leave them on a plate on the chair. It will soon get the idea. They dont' like surfaces which make them feel unsafe. If you put aluminum foil on the chair seat it will not get on it. The wide clear packing tape serves the same purpose if you can adhere the tape so the sticky side is up. I'm not suggesting you leave aluminum foil or tape on your chairs permanently but do so long enough to get the cat out of the habit. Keep a spray bottle of water close to you and when it jumps on the chair give it a squirt. It works better if the cat doesn't know where the water is coming from because if it sees you spray, then it will know to go to the chair only when you aren't around. It will associate getting squirted with the chair and steer clear of it. In the meantime get it something else to sharpen its claws on. This is a natural function and all cats need to do it. Make sure you have a scratching post which is high enough for it to stretch out and claw at. And finally clip its front nails. If you don't know how to do it properly, a vet will do it for you very cheaply. You need to clip just the tips. You must not clip the area which is pink. Those are blood vessels. Only the white tips of the nail, just like you were doing your own. I hope this helps.

The counter weight can be comuted using torques summed around the connection of the rope to the pipe. The idea is to balance the weight of the chair and your volunteer so that the chair will suspend. You will also need an assistant behind the curtain to make the fine adjustment and to keep the pipe level. The intermediate support keeps the system level while the chair is on the floor. The ropes have to be strong enough to lift the weight of the chair, the subject, the counter weight and the pipe. Assume about 400 lb. Under this tension, you will want pulleys that provide about 10:1 advantage so that your second assistant can manange the task. Suspend the pulleys from the scaffold, put the support under the pipe, have the subject take a seat, connect the counter weight, have your second assistant operate the rope and pulleys to lift the system while your first assistant keeps the pipe level. It really works. j
