- Q: I really need to get to Japan and im hoping to get a nursing position there but it that falls through i was thinking about the exchange. If I work overseas as an AAFES employee in Japan will i get SOFA status? If i have SOFA I would be able to drive and so one without a VISA? is that correct? And where would i go if i got sick since i'm not a spouse or a dependent? Any past overseas DOD or AAFES employees have any good answers?
- Why do you NEED to get to Japan? Getting a job with AAFES from the US will be nearly impossible unless you are seeking an upper management position. Also, the SOFA we have with Japan heavily favors locals (Japanese) in the hiring for AAFES. Finally, the salary you get paid by AAFES for the other positions that may be available to you won't pay enough for you to live in Japan on. You would be better off trying to get a contract position (no guarantee of full SOFA benefits) or get a civil service job with a government agency. As for nursing, it is a very underpaid job in Japan...not the respect it gets in the US. In fact, there is a shortage and they have been importing Filipinos to fill the void and they pay them even less than they do Japanese. Nursing is not a good career path for a foreigner in Japan.
- Q: Hi I was giving a beautiful sofa today and was gonna use it in the only space available which is an empty upstairs bedroom the only problem is it wont fit threw the hallway vertically and theirs a wall in the way of the door entranceso the only option i have is to try to get it threw the window in the room which both panes open inward so theirs more than enough space, the problem is how would i go about doing this?i'm thinking there is more than enough space to put a few ladders to the window with rope on the top tied down so it doesnt slip back wrapping the sofa in pad liners tieing rope around it and halling it upIs there an easier way to do this task without hiring someone to do it for me for $300? thanksbtw its on the backyard side of the house so i cant hire someone with a crane

- Get a strong piece of plywood and cover it with foam batting and stick it underneath the couch cushions. It should give enough support until you can replace it. Congrats on the new home.

- You do not get a SOFA card. The SOFA is the Status of Forces Agreement. That is the equivalent of a treaty where the host country agrees to defer legal matters to be handled by say...the U.S. for U.S. personnel. What you need is an immigration visa. You have to get the packet together and submit it through the U.S. Consulate (Embassy) in your particular region. There is one in Frankfurt, Berlin and I think Munich, but I am not sure about that one. I was married to a British woman, and had to get the ducks in a row before she could come to the U.S. She eventually became a dual citizen. I lived in Germany for 6 years while assigned in the U.S. Army there. Being that your spouse is from a former Soviet Bloc country, there may be an additional hurdle too, but once again, talk to the Consulate about that. You have to get this immigration visa prior to you leaving the country to bring her with you. get on that quickly. thanks and good luck.

- I don't know about England but I know that ROWE is a good brand. I have a beautiful sectional that came with a lifetime guarantee on the frame. We love it. I would definitely spend a little more for good quality. We went through four lower priced sofas in 10 years. We've already had this one for 6 and it still looks great.
