- Leather sounds fine. You won't really have to worry about damage that much if you don't have pets or children around. Quality is most important, leather or otherwise. We scrimped and bought a cheap sofa, it has a removable slip-cover that is easy to clean, but we are regretting our cheap purchase. A good quality sofa will age much better. Keep the colour neutral and it will also stand the test of time with any decor changes you might make in the future too.

- Dogs don't generalize very well, so letting him up on one piece of furniture will not make him think he can get up on all furniture. Don't worry about people telling you to keep him on the floor or he will think he's alpha......that's nonsense. My dogs all get on the furniture, they are allowed, unless humans need the space,then they get off.

- Your not going to like my answer but you are using the wrong thread to repair the sofa the thread you need is almost the size of fishing line as for slip covers if you place some foam rubber under the cover it will stay in place . Good luck with your project.

- if you can find. it try a product called saddle soap.if not wash it with Murphy's soap.or go to the auto store a pick up a product called MOTHERS leather conditioner.i would go with the mothers conditioner First.my wife is a smokier and that is what i use.
