- Q: I have an existing hardwood floor that I want to tile over (it's not in good condition). Can I put cement board then tile directly onto the hardwoods or do I need plywood on the hardwoods then cement board then tile? I don't want the floors to be 2 thick in addition to the hardwoods.
- Can you explain better? What do you mean when you say the hardwood is not in good condition? Uneven?Decaying?Quick answer if the hardwood is either, youre better off taking it out and starting with a good base.

- Cement board, plywood can do partition, gypsum board, plywood can do ceiling. Aluminum-plastic panels are only decorated with the surface, both can be. Cement board strength is good, but the weight is large, suitable for partition board; gypsum board has several kinds, there are partitions with a plate with a ceiling. There are several plywood, the general 3 to 5 plywood can do decorative panels of the grassroots, there are thick plywood can be used to do partition.

- do not use anything from lowes or home depot. what you need is a self leveling underlayment. go to a concrete supply house or contractors supply store. I recommend United Products self leveling underlayment or Dayton Superior's Levelayer I. Mix it and pour it. that's it. wait a day or 2 and you can lay your tile.

- None of the above. The pressure and weight on the ground is greater with a board under the mixer. However, the board distributes the weight across a larger surface area thereby reducing the pressure at any given point.

- Also remember that when you go to set the toilet down... you have one shot to do it in. So make sure you take your time and set it well. The wax ring will not work again.

- You don't need cement board but you do need an isolation membrane. I use several coats of redguard so if the concrete cracks those cracks won't be transferred to the tiles. Also make sure the concrete is at least a month old before laying tile.
