I know you use cement board for tiling, but if you are putting up an enclosure do I still use cement board?
- You don't need to use Durock (cement board) if you are installing a surround. You would use that if you were putting tile around the tub. Other posts mention green board, and that is what was used in the past, but it is more common now to use a wallboard that is mold and mildew resistant, such as Gold Bond XP, made by National Gypsum, which is purple. You should be able to find that, or a similar product by another manufacturer at your local building materials dealer. Good luck!
- Q: I am in the process of purchasing a townhome and I am looking to tear up the existing 12 ceramic tile that covers the entire main level... an area close to 600 sq. ft. to make way for laminate flooring. Thinset has been used to bond the tile to the cement backer board, and the backer board has been screwed to the wooden subfloor. There is also some sort of adhesive/mortar bonding the cement board to the wooden subfloor. What tools will I need. Are there any techniques that would make it easier? Would trying to remove the cement board damage the subfloor? If so, would it be acceptable to repair damage with some sort of floor leveling compound?

- Q: I currently have aluminum siding on my house, I want to replace it with stucco. I need to do a full tear off because behind the siding is compressed fiberboard. I will need to apply a backboard to stucco over, so the question is, should I apply cement backer board, hardiboard or plywood? Plywood would be the easiest to apply, and possibly the cheapest, but that doesn't mean it would be best. Any stucco pros with some insight?
- yea after the rip off you need to staple some felt paper (some people call it tar paper) then you neeed to use gavlanised roofing nails to nail up the wire mesh..then apply stucco...I would just nail up some 1/2 plywood..then felt paper then wire then stucco

- Q: When laying down cement backer board for a slate tile installation, I laid the board a bit too far from the wall, so I pushed it until it was flush with the wall. I think by doing this I must have shifted some of the thinset underneath, because I noticed that the board has a slight dip in it, of maybe 1/16-1/8. Is this going to be a problem, or will it be taken care of when I put thinset over it to lay the tile. This is obviously my first time laying tile.On a side note, when laying slate, is it best to use thinset or medium set, I've heard conflicting opinions.

- Q: The floor is on a raised foundation and we were told that there are 2 options: float it on thin set or use a concrete back board. Is there any perference to one over the other? I don't want the tile to crack.
- I've never went wrong with cement backer board. Any flexibility and your grout will crack.
- Q: Its a baffle over an old fireplace where a gas heater has been installed. A cement based repair was hopeless, builders glue lasted a while but eventually busted when heater used on high for lengthy period. Crack getting bigger so need to get it fixed before a re-installation becomes necessary. Thanks.
- go to mitre 10 or place makers and ask an assistant to show you a heat resistant cement that will glue cement board but in saying that gorilla glue is fairlie versatile however companies have spent years discovering the best adhesive for every purpose and I'm conident you will find just the right stuff
- Q: can a double drywall wall be replaced with cement board or backer board?

- The tiles are not soaked in place, the water slurry is thickened, the moisture is absorbed by the tiles too fast, the adhesion between the two is reduced, plus the shrinkage of the cement, thus causing the tiles to fall off. If you are using ceramic tile adhesive tiles, can not be completely with the adhesive, and at least 1: 1 ratio of cement and stirring use. Do not use cement sticks completely completely.
