- Q: Do I have to put cement backer board down before laying ceramic tile or can I go over existing vinyl floor?
- I would worry more about whats under the vinyl. If the subfloor is just 1/2 plywood, it will move up and down when walked on. It may not be measurable with the vinyl but it will with hard ceramic tile. Your tiles and grout will crack. Most ceramic tiles require at least a 3/4 subfloor. Ceramic adhesion will not be good either over vinyl.
- Q: Then I have to install marble in replace of this tile. I have laid a lot of ceramic tile but I being told that marble is a real pain in the but. I just started my business and this will be my first big job. Please give me your input. I live in Denver Colorado. Thank you
- As a business, you need time saving tools. they make a reciprocating flat bladed, heavy duty chisel that is made specifically for blasting off tile and linoleum- buy it at carpet and tile stores, about $200.00. do not bother with the handy man types, they will burn our on the first job. If you can't afford one, go rent one for your first few jobs- believe me, they are money makers. then uses mastic fill or heavy duty grinder to level the backing and get all the old adhesive off. the surface has to be perfect- and I mean perfect! to do the job right. Marble is a tough one, but if you take your time, you can do it ok- the trouble you will have with it is mostly accurate cutting. measure twice, use cardboard templates, what ever it takes to do it perfect. As a pro, you customer will expect perfect. If you mess up with marble, you have to go buy another piece and start over- no hasty “hidey-fixies” , or your reputation will be shot really quick and you'll be back to bummer work. If you demand absolute perfection of yourself, believe me, you will be covered up with work, even in this economy. I knew a tile guy - that's mostly a one man show, as you know- who was such a perfectionist, one time I watched him knock out a whole completed job because it did not meet his standards- he replaced the whole thing at his own expense. The thing was, that action of him smashing what we all thought was a perfect job, got around all the contractors. we all said, Wow! If he would do that just for a very minor, invisible mistake, he is the man I want!” I would wait three extra weeks just to get him on all my jobs and even paid premium for him. He was in huge demand and became very wealthy- In slump times, he was always working when his competitors would all be idle..
- Q: What can I put on the two walls that have the cement backer board? Is there only certain things that I can put on them. They are about 3 ft. away from the stove. What is the code for this. I am at a loss, but I need to do something about this. Anyone know about wood stove codes. Thanks...
- In WA state, with a *certified* wood stove, the clearence is anywhere from 18 to 24 inches. You can put anything non-combustable on that wall... tile, rock, brick, Z brick, or metal plating with 1 air space from backer board. You could always check with the court house to find out what your local building codes are.

- go to mitre 10 or place makers and ask an assistant to show you a heat resistant cement that will glue cement board but in saying that gorilla glue is fairlie versatile however companies have spent years discovering the best adhesive for every purpose and I'm conident you will find just the right stuff
- Q: Can I lay tile on top of an old cultured marble top w/o cement board or plywood?
- no.... you have to have some type of underlyment..... or it will come out like crap....
- Q: The reason I ask is b/c my boyfriend was supposed to tile the kitchen..he put down the cement board for it and assured me we bought enough clearance tile. I was unsure and measured, we don't. He has procrastinated and I don't know how to tile anyways, so I want to lay a different floor. BUT I don't want to just throw away this cement board(might learn to tile one day). Is there a type of flooring that could easily just be installed over top of the cement board?
- You could put down a floating hardwood or laminate floor over it. THen if you ever decide to tile it, you can take up the floor with no damage to the cement board. It's also possible to get some clearance accent tiles and do a boarder or something to help stretch the tile you do have.
