The backerboard manufacturer will tell you what method of taping is required for their product; generally, it will be with a mesh-type tape embedded in whatever you are using to install the board. (This doesn't have to be thin-set cement, you can also use regular latex based tile adhesive. Just be sure to apply it according to the manufacturer's instructions.) Most tubs and shower pans have a lip on the front, back, and side. The board can sit right on this lip. Pack some of the thin-set or adhesive into this joint, if you need to build it up level with the surface of the backer. This is most important if you are not starting with a full tile on the bottom; the tiles should have at least 80% contact with most adhesives or cements.

Why is it that a 1 thick cement block breaks easier than a 1 thick piece of pine. density. wood is long strands of thick, dense fiber essentially strung together, cement is a mix of individual rocks with a water/concrete bonding, but there is air mixed in during the mixing process. there are more areas in between the rocks to be weaker, less dense. this may be a bad example.. but liken it to a bathtub with water that is iced over completely, and a bathtub with only ice water.. in between the ice, you can put your hand through, because it is essentially water and less dense than the ice... but with the completely covered ice water, you cannot easily put your hand through.. . i guess also i was thinking of a game of red rover if you have ever played it, it is easier to run through when the other team is holding hands, than when they link elbows.. essentially making the bond stronger with bigger parts of the arm.

Your tile man is right. The primer may fail and then your tiles will come crashing down. Which costs more, the cement backerboard or the tiles? Why did you paint it? And why did you use drywall compound on the patches? The paint is not compatible with cement, and the drywall compound is just some ground minerals and water or a little vinyl admix. If you can carefully remove the cement board, you may be able to reuse them by flipping them over. Use a stiff scraper and get the compound off the joints, and then the tip of a screwdriver to open the screw heads so you can remove them.
