Q: I am looking to save money on the electric/gas bill this winter and am considering a diesel generator to supply domestic power at 240 volts.Is this practical?
Home made electricity from a generator is more expensive than that from a supplier. They get huge bulk discount on fuel and their equipment is way more efficientt. But, and this is quite a big but. if you also use a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use the engine cooling system to heat your house, you win hands down. Think of it as either sightly more expensive electricity and free heating, or slightly more tricky heating and free electricity.
Q: and diesel generator and ATS that switches between two electrical sources ??
There may be no difference. It will depend on the application. For example, if I specified an ATS that had the proper voltage and current capacities, the only other item of concern would be to determine if the transfer would be a make before break or a break before make type of transfer. In a make before break, it would mean the sources would be placed into parallel operating condition before one of the sources was interrupted. This would require the ability to synchronize the sources. Which means the frequency, voltage and phase relationship of the sources must match before they are placed into parallel service. On a break before make switch, usually only phase rotation and approximate voltage levels are of concern. Hope this helps, Newton1Law

Q: Hi. I'm thinking about getting a 15KVA Cummins generator.I want to know how many hours can I run a Diesel Generator before I have to give it a rest? How many hours do I need to rest it before I can get it started again. I live in a hot and dusty area.I have heard that Diesel engines are happier if they are just kept running and they hate being turned off and on, is that true?Any help or insight would be appreciated.Greetings from Iran
you need to read the documentation. No such thing as a diesel that runs forever All engines need fluids checked. In generators, there is prime power and standby power. Your warranty will be different for each type. The prime units can run for very long times, but are more expensive and have oil adding systems, etc to automoatically maintain levels and things like that. The diesel engine can be shhutdown and restartted like a gas engine. The turbo and starter motor are the real reasons for not doing short starts and stops. Also, how much load/environment you put on the generator makes a difference in how long it can run too. They can run for a long time as long as they are checked and maintained.
Q: Does any one know the best way to go about have an entire house run off of a generator? Mostly likely over periods of no great than two weeks. But it needs to supply a Washer/Dryer, Central A/C, Water Heater, and all of the basics of a smaller house. I did the math and the math says the max I will need is apprx 13,500W. I've done a lot of research on portable, residential, and even green energy, but I am having trouble finding the best way to go about powering a house continually. I need something relatively quiet, or something I can run a ways from the house.And lastly one more curve ball, this is for west TX, so there's not too much rain, especially these days. This would need to be a big and expensive generator, probably water-cooled - check out prices on OKorder - if you are only there 2 weeks at a time, that is a lot of money to spend, and a big risk to leave it where it could be stolen when you are away. May I respectfully suggest that you consider non-electric alternatives? It seems rather out of place, and certainly not very green to have a petrol or diesel generator chugging away for 2 solid weeks close to what I guess is a holiday home somewhere remote in the countryside. There are fridges and freezers available which run off LPG (propane or butane) and even kerosene (which might be easier for you to transport to your holiday home) The same goes for a water heater and cooker A washer/drier seems unnecessary (and also not at all green) if you live in a desert atmosphere - take a look on OKorder with the search words as follows: caravan washing machine These small machines use very little water and energy, which I suggest will be important factors for you. Finally aircon (the trade I presently work in) - may I suggest that you look for simple, low energy units that use water evaporation for cooling (will also humidify the dry desert air) - if you follow all the above guidelines, you should be able to get by with a 3 or 5KW portable generator that you can take home for safe-keeping. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I think the idea of an all electric holiday home in the wilderness is in need of a serious re-think for many reasons. Good luck!

By the revolutions of the generator, or the (presuming AC output) frequency of the power generated. If the frequency is low, the revolutions are low. If the revolutions drop off when load is added, or frequency falls, you have a problem. somewhere.

Q: Aside from the fact that they just had a massive natural disaster and there resources are stretched to say the least, what is main reason they cant get the reactor under control?From what I've heard it's not receiving enough power to maintain cooling system so it can maintain controlled fission.In my limited understanding it seems the plant survived relatively unscathed other than there diesel generators being flooded/destroyed. The plant is currently on battery backup's which I assume are relatively large and cant just be switched out to maintain the cooling system. Is it just an issue of supplying enough power for the cooling system? Couldn't they park the the USS Ronald Reagan off shore there and borrow some power until stabilized, considering you could power a sizable city off its reactor?
You could, but that's unnessecary at this point. The batteries supply enough power to the facility for them to shut down the reactor if they have to, so as long as they still have their kill switch there's no need for panic just yet.

There is no significant difference. Any generator suitable for one of these uses could be used without change for any of the others. The term standby generator usually implies a machine which is too large to be easily moved.
