Q: My 2001 300M is behaving oddly. Occasionally it will gradually overheat after I have driven around for 15 or so minutes. Yes, occasionally. I took it to my mechanic who changed the thermostat and hoses. I then drove it on a trip on the interstate and over a mountain (140 miles ) It was fine with no signs of overheating. Then the next day when I drove to work in the city, the stop and go traffic had it overheating near the end of the trip. I've been able to keep it from going in the red by using the heater. After this happened most of the days, but not all, I took it back to the shop. He reported that the fans were working correctly and the only thing he could come up with is a weak water pump. He stated that when it did get hot, he was able to bring the temp down just by rev'ing the engine a little.Does that sound right? Any other ideas and how to test?

Q: Today I was installing a new water pump on my 1999 grand Prix. When tightening the bolts one of them snapped off. Now the pump leaks from that broken bolt. I was wondering if I would be able to stop the leak using some sort of sealant or would I have to take the car in to get the bolt removed?
Putting sealant on it might stop it from leaking for a while, but that's not a good fix. If you seal it up and it doesn't work, it could end up being a huge repair. In addition, what if a temp fix leaks profusely at the worse time. The best thing is to take it apart and fix it right.
Q: Our mechanic wants to replace my husband's water pump in his 1996 Saturn saying it is quite loose. We'd like to wait until next week since its a 2 day job and with our schedules it would be difficult. Can it wait for a couple of weeks? Could this leave him stranded?
A leaking water pump could be caused by a bad gasket so it does not have to be changed. Changing a gasket is cheaper. If the leak is due to a crack or a pinhole, then by all means have it changed otherwise you risk a crack of the cylinder head caused by overheating which can cost your thousands. You can get a reconditioned or 2nd hand water pump and can save you money. Just ask your Napa store. Typically, second hands are 20% cheaper and can last for years. Good luck.
Q: i have a 2003 dodge neon and my thermostat keeps rising to the highes level setting off the indicator (its not broken) i did have a leak in the raiditor and it was very notice able..after pacthing is up there was noproblem till yesterday now the thermostat keeps rising i admit the is very little antifreeze in ther and the rest is water but the is the same mixture tha was in the care that it was rinning off for the last three minths i cannot seem to keep the thermostat down my raiditor is in nee of repair but i m wondering if its the water pump does the water pum help regulate engine temperture? ther are no ivsible leaks and no drippiage could it be that i just need to put antifreeze or could it be the water pump or a broken raidiator? help i will give points for best anwser but really i just need help!
I'd say the most likely thing is the thermostat. It is the most common cause of overheating when there is plenty of water in the system. As you already know, the radiator can leak and make it get hot. You can add water and it will stay cool for awhile, until the water leaks out again. The same can be true of a leaky water pump, heater core, or hose. If there is no leak, or no obvious leak, and the system seems to have enough water in it, but it still gets hot it is more than likely the thermostat. The thermostat blocks off the water from the radiator until the engine warms up. It can be damaged by getting too hot (like when you had a bad radiator) and fail soon after. Other possibilities are an electric cooling fan that isn't working, or a blown head gasket.
Q: Im considering installing an electric water pump in my car and i dont know much about electric water pumps yet so if you could tolerate a couple of dumb questions....? are electric water pumps reliable enough to be put into a daily driver (i just used the meziere name as an example, its the only name i am familiar with in electric water pumps)? i realise what the engine is basically done if the water pump goes.... could a change this small ever show up on either mpg or hp readings for a 200hp v6? finally, if the electric water pump just isnt worth the reliability risk, would a water pump underdrive pully do (almost) the same job of freeing work from the engine without putting the motor in harms way? thanks!
I personally would not use an electric water pump on a street car. But ive seen them last pretty long on some cars. You can underdrive the pump but Im pretty sure the HP benefit of the electric pump is better. Meziere makes good quality electric pumps. If your going to go electric, go with Meziere.
Q: 55KW how large is the water pump wiring?
Transmission within 100 meters, 70 square millimeter aluminum cable, or 50 square millimeter copper cable. If you exceed 100 meters, you'll have to add a number to the cable.
Q: Went to bring my car in to get all my belts replaced (minus the timing belt) My car was working fine, nothing was wrong with it. I pick up my car and get it home when I turn to get into the drive way there's this horrible squeal. I bring it back to Pep Boys and they tell me my water pump is broke. Now I don't know anything about cars, but is there a belt that they replaced that does something to the water pump? Please if you know about cars let me know. Thanks
not there fault . just bad timing
Q: noise when i acclerate you cant hear it as much because of engine noise but when its at idle the squealing noise is somewhat loud does anyone know what it could be ? its not the water pump because i bought it new and im not overheating and the belts arent too tight either i have already checked them
Take the fan belt off and spin the water pump by hand. If it's dead silent make sure the new water-pump outer flange is holding the pulley directly over the pulley's on the crankshaft. If they aren't in perfect alignment or you hear noise tear the pump off and take it back. The outer pulley flange or noisy impeller makes it a candidate for a new pump. Why not get your money back from the whining pump and order a Stewart or Moroso aluminum racing pump for a few bucks more.
Q: Leaks right under the water pumpOf my truck ford f-150
The leaking water is telling you that the pump impellor is worn and you need a new pump. Sealed Unit, cant be repaired.
Q: i know a little bout cars always fixed my own since day one but this is the first car i have ever had/workd on with a internal water but thats driven off timeing chain my cars running hot and its holding prusser so i know its not radator or hoses but i need to know a way to check and make sure its the water pump befor i go tearing the engine apart
In the olden days when the fan was attached to the front of the water pump, you could hold the fan by either side and see if it moves at all.If theres movement of the shaft then that usually means the bearings are worn. The more it moves the worse it is.Not much help if you got thermo fans though.
