Q: I have carpeting in a room where I would like to install built-in bookshelves. How should I secure them to the floor? Do I need to remove the carpeting or can I set them on top?: I would really remove the carpet underneath them, put down a tack strip and re-kick the carpet to it and end it with a tidy roll. The major problem with putting them on top of the carpet is leveling. I have some built-ins in my office and library both on top of carpet. As the carpet and padding compresses, it changes the leveling. Also, there is a tack strip along the baseboards which causes the units to pitch forward because it doesn't compress. If I had to do it over, I would strip out the carpet underneath because I'm constantly checking the level as the house settles, too.

Your living room would probably be better suited to a 5X8 (60 X 96) or similar. When choosing a rug, ask the salesperson about wash-ability as some fibres are more prone to staining even when spills are promptly cleaned with rug cleaner. Solid colours also tend to show dirt quicker, so look for a rug with flecks of red in two slightly different shades or even a bit of a texture so that certain unavoidable dirt (lint, pet hair, etc) might be concealed a bit. If you have an Ikea nearby you can get pretty cheap rugs there- especially in the as is room where their floor models and slightly damaged goods go. If you have them, check stores like Sams and Costco, Marshall's, Ross, Big Lots, and TJ Maxx. They have great discount deals. Also consider making your own floor cloth. You will need a painter's canvas drop cloth, some no-sew hem tape (the kind you iron on) and a bit of non-skid rug padding, and some paints. It's pretty cheap and you can customize it. I got lots of how-to's and ideas by just googling how to floor cloth

Q: Well we kind of had a little mis hap and we accidently got a burning piece of paper on the ground. Failing that, get a rug doctor, got the stains from my bong water out of my parents white carpet once saved me getting murdered, then reincarnated by them so they could murder me again!
