- Q: Hi, about 2 weeks ago I was in my ex boyfriend's attic (with his permission! lol) and he noticed a crack, which turned into a hole when I slipped and almost fell through into the bedroom! If you lie in bed you can now see right through to the attic; while it could be considered a design feature, my ex isn't keen on it :-) It's not very big, probably only 1.5ft square if that but obviously the plaster is missing, one of the lathes (think that's what they're called; the thin pieces of wood just behind the plaster) is broken in half and poking throught he hole and little bits of the fibreglass indsulation are falling down. My ex told his landlord who said it would cost ?150 to repair the damage, but I'm convinced my ex could do it himself...but how? Any ideas? I have been offered a large piece of plasterboard, could he use this in any way and would he have to enlarge the hole to replace the entire lathe? How does he replaster...etc - help please!
- You only need to replace the lath with anything which will act as a backing for the spack filler which you will need to get from a hardware store or even your local supermarket if your lucky. A suitable replacement will hold your bit of plasterboard, which you have cut to fill the hole as best as possible, and must be able to cope with the environment in the attic, ie not rot. Then fill the crack around the edge with spack filler (white stuff, like plaster, many different types) Then when thet repair has set fill over the plaster board to make it level with the roof, any white spack filler type material. Dry sand and paint to match celing (that is the hard part). Good luck.
- Q: the fabric lining my jeep's ceiling is missing in the front of my car. came down in bits and pieces and i wasn't able to reattach it. there's a material underneath that looks something like yellow fiberglass??? is that right? is it safe to be exposed to this? i don't use the car much so i haven't had it fixed yet but i'd like to know what i'm dealing with here. thanks for any help!
- Use spray adhesive to stick it back in place.
- Q: I had the roof replaced last summer, but havent had the energy to get up there and take down the ceiling tiles and the fiberglass insulation. I started removing it a section at a time a week ago, and wow! What a mess!. Gravel is falling down on my head and the insulation and tiles are dry now, but its still hard to pull them out. Should I be wearing a mask? Is there anything in the old dried out insulation and ceiling tiles that I should cover my nose? Its making a really big mess, so any suggestions will be helpful.
- You should absolutely weat a mask! There's fiberglass in there you said and you don't want that in your lungs along with all the dust and dirt. Fiberglass never disolves and it is made from glass.
- Q: What kind of materials do you need to decorate a house?
- Fittings: plumbing wire woodworking board gypsum board fir board line cement yellow yarn and other main materials: floor tiles and the like and then include hardware finished furniture
- Q: Moved into a new home several months ago and noticed that the seams in the ceiling connecting the drywall can actually be seen in one room. Is this a common problem?? and what can be done. Do I have any recourse??
- I am a 37 year experienced painter, which has included tons of drywall finishing as well...Now days people use that crappy fiberglass tape and assume this will save one coat of mud(joint compound) on the ceilings, and walls as well...A real finisher will use the paper tape and apply the full 3 coats required and not two like most of these handyman/fiberglass tape users...They have been doing this for years ..quality workmanship is hard to find..also alot of people think that you simply run the joint compound down the center of the tape and this is called taping and floating..not so..to float...means to make even..some joints require floating out to one side or the other..sometime both on bad rafters as far as 36 inches to either side..You do not see that much anymore..they run the joint compound down the center of the joint..and think that is all thier is to it...Your problem is shoddy tradesmen/builders...
- Q: I read that fiberglass insulation that has a backing sheet should have the backing sheet toward the heated space. The insulation in the basement ceiling has the backing sheet toward the inside of the basement not the bottom of the floor above. Does this trap moisture and cause a lot of harm or does it just make the insulation less effective? Do I need to take it all down and start with new insulation? Should I just add a new layer over the top what is there?
- This is not a big deal inside the house. Your basement should have some air flow from the furnace though. If you have a register or return air in the basement just make sure they are open a little. This is more of a concern for an outside wall of your home. Pull a section of it down to see if the joist cavity feels damp. I would guess it won't. Don't worry about it, it will not ever be a problem. If you want you can make slits in the vapor barrier with a utility knife. I would leave it as it is.
- Q: Melamine resin and polypropylene made of plastic bowl is better
- Almost, look at personal use
- Q: which of the following insulating materials that are used in roofs ( foil, fibreglass batts, seaweed) work by trapping a layer of air in them??
- you should make sure to put baffles in against the roof over the eves before you fill it in you do need to get ventilation into the attic or you will cause more damage
- Q: What type of contractor would be able to remove the insulation from the crawlspace ceiling and put it against the outside wall where it would actually be useful?
- The insulation isn't making your floor cold, the weather is. And by code, your exterior walls are already insulated.
