- Q: I tried steaming my carpet with a Rug Doctor, and it didn't work, so I bought a Bissell Proheat. I wanted to use up all the cleaner that I bought for the Rug Doctor before I purchase Bissell carpet shampoo for my new cleaner. The shampoo for the Rug Doctor says it's compatible with all carpet cleaning machines, but the Proheat manual says only to use the Bissell products. I'm a little confused here. Should I use the Rug Doctor shampoo or not?

- A rough estimate is approximately $1500.00. There are however many different brands of carpet. Whatever brand you choose, you'll want a good quality carpet padding. Also you did not state if you are going to need old carpet removed. If you do, this is an added cost. Are you installing the carpet yourself. Not recommended if you have not done this before. This is also an added cost if you'll need it installed. The best of luck to you! It's fun to redecorate, if only it weren't so darn expensive!!!

- TAKE HIM TO A VET ASAP -- it could be a urinary blockage (or a urinary tract infection on its way to causing a blockage) and if if is, it can kill him VERY QUICKLY!!! If it turns out to NOT be that, at least you know for sure and can move on to the other possibilities! You say he's old, so it could just be the incontinence of old age. If there's something new going on at the house: new people/children, new pets, new furniture, used furniture that may have another animals scent on it, new room arrangements, etc., in the house that occurred around the time that you suspect he started doing this, then it could be that he's off-center and confused and emotionally distressed. Have you changed to a different litter or a different food. A different litter could upset his nose. A new food could upset his digestive system. BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. Would you be pissed off at a sick friend or relative because they pissed on your new rug?? NO!! You'd be upset about the situation, yes!!...BUT you'd do whatever you could to help that family member or friend!!! So, HELP YOUR CAT!!! HE'S A FAMILY MEMBER!!! Okay, sorry if it looks like I'm shouting, but, I'm not...caps are the only way I know to direct attention to important comments in the absence of being able to use bold and italics. As for the rug, you will need to clean it REALLY well to remove the odor of his urine, or he will return to that spot, even if he's totally well! - You are going to need roughly 46 square yards of carpet to do these 3 -- more if the rooms are not precisely square/rectangular or there are any cut outs or niches, etc. Look at the price per square yard for good quality, high durability carpet -- you do not want to have to do this again within the next 5 or 10 years. Don't just get an estimate - pick out the exact carpet you want and get an estimate from 3 companies using the same carpet, or the lower estimate will be cheap carpet, cheap padding, and will look like **** in a year or two. If the carpet costs less than $20-30 sq yd these days, it's probably garbage.

- Dad always had Mom save bacon grease so we could use it when drilling holes in heavy iron and steel on the drill press out in the shop. It kept the bit cool while not lubricating the drill and preventing it from biting in to the steel. Braided rag rugs were common and one of my prized possessions is a very large rag rug made by one of my Grannies. My shirts were made from feed sacks and flour sacks. I got to choose which sack of flour or feed we bought at the General Mercantile if the sack was going to end up as a shirt for me. All used wood boards were always saved to be used on another project. Nails were pulled out and straightened on an anvil so they could be used again. Barbed wire was always saved to be used to repair a fence in the future. When we butchered a hog we found a use for everything but the oink. Old fence post, usually mesquite wood, were cut up for firewood. When chicken houses and cow barns and horse barns were cleaned out the hay and manure was spread on the fields to fertilize the crops. Canning jars were saved and reused next season. There were really not many things that were not saved until we found a good use for them. Nothing was ever replaced because something newer or better or faster came out. We waited until something wore out or was used up before we bought a new anything.
