- Q: Hi, I need help with identifying an old rug. A friend of mine, an Englishman who now resides in Florida, possesses this rug. It is white with white tassels, and a black border around the rug itself. The design is quite intriguing as red, black and white are the only colors used. Repeated motifs are a black circle made into quarters, colored in with red, two rows of three black triangles with red dots on them, three sideways flames with lines around them, and what looks like three chickens or three birds, repeated throughout the rug.. My friend was born in Karachi Pakistan in 1965 and this rug was given to his parents by Pakistani friends at the time of his birth...if anyone knowledgeable can help me I.D. this rug, he and I would thank you. We think it may be a Muslim prayer rug...peace. The birds do not show eyes (an Islamic prohibition!)thanksxxxany knowledgeable, serious help would be appreciated.
- I've had limited dealings with antique rugs; I used to assist an antiques dealer who dealt with a good number of rugs, including prayer rugs. I do not think from what you are relating that the rug is a Muslim prayer rug. Prayer rugs incorporate the design of a mihrab; that is, the niche in the wall of mosques used to indicate the direction of Mecca, an important consideration in Islamic prayer. If there is no indication of a direction on the rug, it is most likely not a prayer rug. Also, a well-used prayer rug would show signs of wear and tear, particularly wear in the spots where a worshipper knelt for their prayers. If you can see no obvious wear in areas to indicate use, it cannot be an antique. It sounds like a simple household rug of local Pakistani manufacture, not much older than 40 years. The bird design you describe is common, and I have seen it myself in many rugs.

- I have always had hard wood floors, so I use area rugs and rug runners under foot. I have found that the best rugs are wool rugs. My all time favorite rugs are hand hooked rugs. They are very durable.

- Carefully, with the flat edge of a screwdriver, lift the staple straight up, and see if it will come up in one move. If it doesn't, carefully lift the edge which will come up, and pull the rest of the staples up with those long thin pliers. They are near the edges of the room, aren't they? Do they have thin boards attached to some ends? We took about two days to do this with a rowhouse in Baltimore, and once we got the hang of the long flat headed screwdriver, and the delicate pliers, we were set to go. We also did have to remove these plywood type rulers set near the corners of the room. Once we polished, the staple marks weren't noticeable at all.
- Q: how do you get dark spots out of my rug
- I use the 409 carpet foam stuff and it works wonders! My puppy has a habit of running around in dirt and it gets all over my carpet ... I usually spray the spot let it sit for about 15 min and then rub it out and spray again and rub it out of course. It has worked on everything so far. Even dog throw up/poop/pee and my husbands grease covered shoes when he is done working in the garage! =)

- I used to make my own hooked rugs...just cut a patch of canvas the approx. size of that damaged area and incorporate the patch into the rest of your wool pattern...you could thread some thread first so it will stay in place as you are hooking the rug...Since it's a random pattern it will not be noticed (only from underneath) Right?
- Q: i have a beautiful genuine chinese rug (not the cheap imitations) which needs a clean. it would cost a fortune to have it specialist cleaned i,m to frightened to try these carpet sprays etc in case the colour runs or ruin it. anyone with any ideas pls.
- The way these beautiful rugs were cleaning before there ever was dry cleaners or any such... in the 1800s people used tea leaves. loose tea leaves are scrubbed into the rug..then scrubbed back out again. Check out the references on google.

- rubber backed rugs will ruin vinyl, they turn yellow or grayish colored and you can not get it out. I have ceramic tile in bathroom and rubber backed throw rugs, and they have been in use for three years and haven 't discolored yet. Swiffer won't hurt ceramic,
