- Q: We recently hired a contractor to remodel the entire bathroom due to water damage. We are getting close to tiling. There is a tub going in then the walls will be tiled for the shower.The contractor put green board in the entire bathroom first. Then he put water barrier paper over the green board in the areas that will be tiled. Then put hardy backer cement board over that. Is this a good way to do it? There is no cement board below a certain height because the tub will be there. I wasn't sure if this is a good way to do it?
- It's fine. I wouldn't have put the green board up where the cement board was going up, to save time an money. The green board is unnecessary there. But, it won't cause any problems.
- Q: I would like to build 4 steps on a incline. It is above a retaining wall but will be a good foot away from the wall all on firm packed dirt. I have a couple questions. One side of the steps would be next to the garage wall.1. Can I pour cement up against the cinder wall?2. If so how would someone build steps form without any boards against the one side. So basically just have the one side and front plate.3. Or would you recommend having a board against the wall. Or pull it out after the form has set?

- you dont have to but the idea is to fill and fiberglass tape the seams keeping them ridged so that in years to come the grout doesnt crack out. Yet thats something rather new, you should be fine just filling any of the voids with mastic adhesive as you lay them. A portland cement mix works well on durarock, and the new backer board, though drywall quickset works just as well.
- Q: why is gypsum always interground with cement clinker during the final stages of portland cement manufacture?
- Gypsum is added to cement to control the setting. Cement contains C3A and C3S as the major constituents. These compound react very rapidly under water. This is not desirable as it reduces the workability of the cement past. In order to control this early setting, gypsum is added to form a secondary compound called Ettringite which kind of shields the C3A and C3S from reacting rapidly with the water.
- Q: I'm trying to install tiles on the back of my stove's wall, so grease won't stick on the wall and it can be easier to clean the tiles versus the wall. I've read the DIY instructions in the internet, but since I'm not installing tiles in a wet area, is it necessary to get green drywall or cement back board? Thanks. Any help is appreciated.
- no, but the problem is they'll protrude, so what I did was cut away the drywall (1/2) and put in 1/4 backerboard and then installed them flush with the drywall, it looks more professional though it is a bit more work
- Q: I want to put a small addition to the side of my concrete bungalow. it will be shed with lean to roof I want to construct this without having to put columns/post on the side of the house what I want to do is attach like a piece of 2x4 or 1x4 to the wall horizontally and have my rafter attached to it. the excisting concrete wall is made of 6 inch thick cinder blocksplease help
- If it were me, I'd attach the board to the cinder block wall with tapcon screws and then use joist hangers for the roof beams. I'd use at least a 2x4... I'd probably go with something bigger, but I also tend to over-build. :)

- well u do put cement board in a shower ceiling.....but not somewhere to paint it........maybe u ment sheetrock!..u have to tape and mud the joints... lic. gen. contractor
