- Q: I recently lost a large wall rug in my house due to a fire. The only information I have for it is the following: My grandmother purchased it from a traveling salesman in Canada sometime between 1967-1971. The dimensions of the rug are approx. 6ft long by 3-4 ft tall. It has a picture of polar bears on icebergs. The edging was red yarn-like fringes.I think that this rug is worth something but I can't find anything like it. I need to put a value on it for insurance purposes so I want to find out its true value and need documentation to prove that that rug, or one close to it, is worth a certain amount of money. My other grandmother had a similarly sized rug, possibly sold by the same guy, but it had a bullfighter and bull on it. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.
- I'm not incredibly familiar with rugs, but I can try to give some help. After searching around a little bit, it seems that most of the rugs fitting this description are between $200-400, but rugs also run much higher in price. If it is a hand-made rug of that size made by a fine rug-maker, you could be talking $1000 dollars or more. I can't say too much more, since I'm in no way qualified to appraise a rug, since I don't know enough about them, but I included some links in the sources that might help you price your rug. - I would contact a high end rug store in your area (the kind that sells persian, antigue rugs etc) or even by emai or phonel:Larger cities have many (such as NY, Atlanta, LA). Generally, the rugs might need to be cleaned prior to storage as grime dirt help to break down the fibers. Then they must be rolled (never folded) and put into unbleached muslin bags for cleanliness. Cleaning must be done by someone especially trained to work on vintage, collectable rugs (again this info can be gotten at a fine rug store).

- Hi Claire, In choosing a Rug which lasts approx 10 years or more I would suggest that in this case you choose a neutral color. I realize many may think that Tan, Taupe or Light Gray. are a safe choice and so basic. But with that said Carpeting can expensive. Changing the Wall Paint is far more cost effective. In the future, you may decide to use another wall color paint in the room. Tan, Taupe or Light Grey would be my thoughts for you ! * All of the above mentioned colors come in a variety of many shades. I also suggest taking a Paint chip with you to the store for comparisons if you are concerned. Tan/Taupe will provide an earthy color to the room, while Gray colors are visually cool color. - Is this the same rug I just answered about? I didn't know it was brand new! I assumed it was just old and funky. Try Carpet Fresh or any sprinkley carpet freshener. If it is really giving you a headache it is most likely just new fiber smell. Kinda like new car smell but different materials. In which case it will fade soon enough. but if it is really making your head hurt, take it outside and lay it out in the sun for a day or two. The ultra violet rays should cook off that new fiber smell a bit.
- Q: I live on the 2nd floor of an apartment building. While attempting to do laundry earlier today, I didn't notice that my washer never shut off.. - it is standard practice to dry and then clean carpet that has been soaked with water. but if it is really soaked they need to suck all the water out and then put special carpet drying fans under the carpet. what are they doing ? you did not tell us. and i guess it is their washer supplied with the apt and not yours correct ?
- Q: I recently took out the carpet in my apartment. Between the carpet and the mat under that, there were thin, wispy strands off fiber-like material and quite a lot of it. Is this asbestos? Or is it normally used under carpets. Also, if it is asbestos, is my health in danger?
- Highly doubt it. Asbesto's was found in ceiling and floor tile in a compressed manner. Also was used to rap pipes as insulation, but inside the rapping the asbesto's is powdery. So your alright, but wear a face mask, those carpet fibers are yucky.
- Q: 2 days ago our carpet started leaking. None of our pluming goes underneath it which amazes us. We have no money for plumbers or anyone to check on it. We do have a water heater next to it but its in ground. and we check on it every 2 days and there are no leaks leading to it.
