- it can mean anything. buy a scan tool or take it to any auto parts store and theyll scan it and tell you what the problem is. it isnt always emissions. My 99 Saturn tripped a code that said the idle control system RPM was high. you never know, that light justs lets you know something is wrong. as long as it isnt flashing, youre fine, just get it to a shop whenever you can. if it is flashing, take it to the shop IMMEDIATELY or serious damage could occur.

- Q: I have a 97 Toyota 4-Runner that I‘ve had for 3 years it is in perfect condition. Just recently the check engine light came on I have never had that in 3 years. - The gas cap is one of 500 things that can turn the light on. You have an OBDII vehicle. The best thing to do is invest in a decent Code Reader/Scanner. The decent ones start at $50 and most auto parts stores sell them or search online. The great thing is they'll work on any car sold in the U.S. from 1996 to present day so you'll always need it and use it kinda like a screwdriver. I don't know why everyone doesn't have one yet. The Check Engine light is for the engines computer system which includes emission controls and all it's sensors and solenoid's. When the light comes on, that means the computer has flagged a problem and has set a trouble code. So step one is to plug into the diagnostic connector, that is 24 from the steering column on all vehicles 1996 and newer, with a code reader and see what the trouble codes are. For example, code P0442 is the universal loose gas cap code. But it also be a small air leak anywhere on the fuel tank. P stands for Powertrain, then the following numbers are specific to the area the problem is. In Missouri, you can get codes checked for free at Autozone but MO is currently trying to follow Cali by making it illegal for Autozone to clear the codes. If you do go there, get the code numbers and run!! Like Davey said, THEY ARE NOT AUTO TECHNICIAN'S. Long story short, your next step is to get the code numbers from the vehicles computer. Write them down, then go from there. Come back and post the codes in a new question.
- Q: My check engine light is flashing when i accelerate on my 1989 ford bronco. it doesn't flash with coasting or just idling. Only when i am accelterating. Auto Zone cant read it because it is a soft code. How do i find out why it is flashing?
- You can do all this for free if you know how to work the system and by that I mean Walmart. The system is Walmart. Go to your local walmart and pick up an onboard diagnostics system. Hopefully you have a 97 or newer vehicle. Look for the O.B.D. II package that says it will turn off your check engine light. It works because I have tried it myself. You don't turn the car on though (just read the instructions). Once you complete all the instructions it will make the light turn off. This doesn't mean that it fixed the problems or that the light will never turn back on again. Just drive for about 15 minutes and the light should come back on. That should give you a fresh start. Now turn the car off and plug in the O.B.D. II in again. Now you can proceed to write down the codes and look them up in the book provided. Once you have all your codes and have written down what each code means on a piece of paper, you can go back into Walmart and go to the refunds section. Tell them the equipment you bought doesn't plug into your car's onboard computer because its the wrong model. They will give you your money back and thats how you do all this for free.
- Q: i have a 2001 chrysler sebring that the BCM went bad. so I went to the auto salvage and they replaced my BCM. thing is, when i got home i locked up my car as usual. then later i wanted to go to the store, so i attempted to get back in my car when the horn kept beeping and parking lights flashing. i‘m assuming the BCM was original to the 2001 sebring with some anti theft. when i bought the car used from a private person he only gave me a key, no remote or anything, just a key. well turns out that the BCM in there that got fried was the wrong BCM for that car to begin with, thus the BCM frying on me, so anyway. now that the right one is there i need to know how to bypass the system so my horn will stop beeping and i can start my car because my car will start but die immediately i think is due to the anti theft. so how can i get my car at least to the dealership so i can have the remote lock/unlock programmed? any advice? please.
- Have you look at the computer it may be bad a bad computer will not let the car start it will crank all day but if the computer is bad it will not start at all
- Q: when I drive it uphill it looses power but when I drive straight on and downwards it is fine .Can anyone tell me what might be the reason why my truck looses it‘s power going uphill even if I step on the gas pedal the velocity still same and if possible be more specific , thank you I really would appreciate it ?
- its probably still under warranty take to your dealer,unless you have a scan tool and the knowledge you will never fix it.
- Q: Mechanic turned it off using a tool- said it was an old crash sensor code but it came back on the next day. He couldn‘t trouble shoot it any further- only option on his tool was to turn it off. It hasn‘t been hit in years- why would the light start blinking now? I tried to manually reset it following the procedure but it did not work. He said it is probably the sensor in the console. Is there anything else I can do to fix it. I‘ve heard that sensor is $800. Where could I find it for less? Junk yards like to sell with the airbag which I don‘t need. Is this an easy job to do by myself?
- turn on the airbag if possible and take off the negative side of the battery for 6 second when you do this it will reset all the error codes and the status of the computer will be default don't forget to hook the negative side back up
- Q: I have a 2003 VW Passat Turbo engine,My mechanic told me the only code that came up after checking it was system too lean and that altitude could be a probable cause, I‘ve been driving the car back and forth for California to Flagstaff, AZ. He told me to pour injector fluid in it, and after filling up the tank and adding the cleaning injector fluid, I‘ve been running the car for about a week and the tank is getting low, I turned it on earlier and the light was off. Would that have been the problem then? Or should I get it checked again? He said that sometimes they get dirty and cause that light.
- I highly suggest you change to a better grade of gasoline too such as chevron super unleaded, you have a high performance engine, and the cleaner better fuel you use the longer the engine will last. chevron has techron in it, this is a fuel system cleaner sold in auto parts stores too. Ifs smarter to keep your engine clean to begin with, than to go back later and clean hardened deposits out. Clean oil, clean filters and good quality fuel will help keep your car running stronger, longer.
- Q: I have sony 6x9‘s and 6 1/2 for speakers which are hooked up to the amp that came with the car. i also have 2 12‘ Infinty‘s with a rockford 8 gauge amp kit and p-400 amp. the dealer i got them installed at said i do not need one but my speedometer lights go off and on when they want?? need a little help please!? thanks
- Sounds like you just need to upgrade to a better car battery. Make sure you get a good one tho because if you get a cheap one your lights will still dim.
- Q: I went to Auto Zone and got codes. Yikes I have 5 different ones. Guy said all but the first could be linked to transmission. So here‘s the codes: PO171system to lean, bank ox; PO743torque converter, circuit electrical; PO1401Manf. control auxiliary, emissions controls; PO1507Manf. control veh. speed, Idle speed control, auxiliary inputs; PO1744Manf. Control, transmission. I had the transmission replaced with used one last year. It seems OK, but after I drive it a while the OD light starts flashing. But the real rough idle when car is stopped is really bothering me. It is worse when it is in drive, but still bad when in nuetral or park, so it may be related to transmission. It reminds me of the way a stock car idles, but my car is far from being race car. PLEASE help! Also, if you know where I can get suggested parts at a good price please let me know.
- I have to agree with the certified mechanic who also answered you - partially. The AutoZone down the street from my apartment has employees who have worked as mechanics and are/were certified. But I estimate that 95 out of 100 auto parts stores (regardless of the chain or franchise) don't have knowledgeable employees. So, yes, take your car to a reputable shop (or the dealer - if you don't mind paying a hefty price) and have them look it over. Get it fixed, then, if you still want to save a buck on diagnosis, ask around to find out if any of the employees of any of the parts stores around you have ASE or similar certification. Don't take the word of anyone who hasn't spent half their life studying cars and actually working on them. Listen to the certified mechanic. There are too many variables to give an online answer to your problem. Take the car to a shop and fork over between $40 and $100 for them to do a computer diagnosis on it (estimated price range in the lower 48 here, in the USA). That estimate is based upon most places either charging a minimum of ? hour or 1 hour labor just to hook up the computer and read the codes and try to come up with a diagnosis. Further troubleshooting will probably be necessary - most likely at an hourly rate. Then there will be the actual repairs.
