- Q: I'm laying slate tile over linoleum that was installed about 6 months ago....the linoleum is in very good condition, very smooth with no rips or lifting. I've done some research and figured I could put down cement board and then lay the tile on that. The floor under the linoleum is cement. Is there a special drill/special screw necessary to attach the cement board to the cement foundation?
- You would be a lot better off removing the linoleum. You wouldn't need the expense/hassle of installing cement board, since you would be tiling directly on concrete. If you really don't want to do that, you will need to use a hammer drill and Tapcons. Use 3/16 x 1-3/4 screws. with a 5/32 masonry bit. Remember that you are adding height to the floor as well, and will need to make transitions to other surfaces. If there are any doors that open into the kitchen, they may need to be cut. If a backer-board is needed, how do I connect the backer-board onto the concrete? Will I need special screws?
- Lemme give you some alternatives to using mortar for this project. By small stone pavers,, are these really not thick like regular bricks but more like tiles--maybe 1/2 or 1 inch thick? Then if it were me this is how iwould proceede. First get rid of the carpet. Then wire brush off the floor and steps etc to get all the loose stuff off. Then get some construction adhesive that works with bricks,,and a short bristle brush. Lay the adhesive down using a notched trowel and RUB adhesive into the bottom of the brick. When you lay them in they will really adhere well using this method. Cover it up and let it dry or 2 days. Then get some mortar mix and use it like grout.

- It's next to impossible to remove Ceramic with out damaging the cement board. Esp. if the tile was installed properly to begin with. Tile is installed with a thin-set type mortar when using a Cement backer. If installed over plywood they would have used a ceramic Mastic [glue] That can be removed much easier. You can however lay the new tile over the old, but this will raise the level of the floor, not a good idea when in the Kitchen.
