- Q: As an artist, I'm experimenting with plaster and cement.As a resident of a temperate zone, I'm wondering about temperature, curing times, and bonding to substrate.I'm working on square pieces of particle board. I rough up the surface with a wire brush to improve bonding to the substrate.Both plaster and cement create heat as they solidify. Are either impaired by a low (and possibly sub-freezing) temperature? I have a makeshift oven that can reach 110 to 120 degrees (F) regardless of the outside temperature. Will heating cement or plaster to this extent improve its ability to bond to wood? Might it only reduce setting time?
- hi we in the building industry use pva glue to coat surfaces for plaster plus adding it to the mix , if you are using finnish coat because of its smooth finnish , if you use a coating plaster it would adhere better but still use pva, cement is different, still use pva but it also crazes if used neat but suggest you use silver sand in the mix it is the smoothest sand and is used by artists in there work it is very fine grained, curing times will be shortened by heat but to much will crack or craze so better to heat a cupboard and store in there and not cook them, hth.
- Q: how do you join cement board from a shower wall to drywall?
- Other than being nailed to the same stud, it is not all that necessary that they be joined together. Just figure on the tile overlapping the drywall about a half an inch to kill the crack. You can mesh tape them together however and skim them flat with each other as long as you don't skim wide into the tile board area. You could do as little as just caulk the crack with silicone too.

- Not sure your spelling is correct, but cement board such as DUROCK uses special screws for installation. No fiber cement board uses nails they all get installed with SCREWS
- Q: I would like to build 4 steps on a incline. It is above a retaining wall but will be a good foot away from the wall all on firm packed dirt. I have a couple questions. One side of the steps would be next to the garage wall.1. Can I pour cement up against the cinder wall?2. If so how would someone build steps form without any boards against the one side. So basically just have the one side and front plate.3. Or would you recommend having a board against the wall. Or pull it out after the form has set?

- Q: I am building a shower in the basement of a 50 year old house in Michigan. I am using cement board (backerboard) for the sides which I framed in. The back of the shower is the existing cement block wall. Can I apply the mortar and tile to the cement block wall just as I would for the cement board? Will there be any problems with it stinking? The wall will get chilly during the winter.
- Do not do this if you want a good long lasting job. Moisture from the shower and vapor from the block work both ways. A plastic liner first attached to the wall then cement backerboard lagged to the wall will give a better result. Not perfect but better. If you just attach the tiles the vapor that comes through the walls will affect either the grout or the block itself causing it to efforvescence making the bond less strong. Painted areas should also be avoided to attach tiles to. Once again the vapor and water work both ways. Once you get the tiles up really pay attention to the condition of the grout and any cracks that develop along the sides to repair them as soon as possible. Also take into account the moisture that you are getting in the basement naturally. Is it a 'dry' basement or do you have water problems. It may be that it would be less hassle to just paint the wall in the shower and be able to maintain the paint than going to all the effort of tiling methods just to have a mold machine.
