Q: I've play flute for 8 years now, piccolo for 6. Last year when playing for chairs I got 2nd chair. I got absolutely no solos nor piccolo parts. Being my sophomore year, I didn't mind all that much. Our flute section leader was first chair. Now this year she is drum major. I know for a fact she's planing on once again not giving me any solos nor piccolo parts. It's really bumming me down. What should I do?: Are you REALLY better than her? Or do you just THINK you are because you aren't hearing flaws that someone who isn't currently playing an instrument would hear? I've had that happen a few times. I'd be recording a guitar part and think I nailed it, only to realize it sounded like crap when I listened to the playback. That could very well lead to a situation where you believe you're a better player than her because you're hearing the flaws in her playing, but not in your own (because you're occupied with playing). Try this: Have someone record both of you playing the same piece of music, and play them back for you without telling you which one is you and which one is her. That's the only way for you to honestly see if you really are better than her without your own bias getting in the way. If you don't know which recording is you playing, you can't be biased into thinking that one sounds better.

Q: i just got a chair and its at perfect height when its all the way down.. but when i get off the seat.. the chair shoots back up.. when i sit back down, it sinks all the way down.. please tell me a way the seat can just stay down without going back up when im not on it..?: I don't know what make and model your chair is, and thus what features it has, BUT... most of these chairs has a pneumatic cylinder in the support column, and for adjusting seat height, a LEVER beneath the seat, usually near the right front corner as you sit in the chair. To use this type of adjustment, you press the handle upward against the bottom of the seat, and THEN sit on it, forcing the seat down. When the seat is down, or at the desired elevation, release the handle, and the seat should stay there. If you want the seat at a higher level, remove ALL load from the seat, press the release handle, and a spring should lift the seat. Then when you have the desired height, release the handle and the seat should stay at that level. IF the seat is raising all by itself when you're not sitting on it, I suspect that the adjusting VALVE is not seating properly, and allows air back into the cylinder, and the spring raises the seat [sort of like magic!!!!]. Turn the chair over and check the valve [if it's not concealed] and look for lint or debris which is keeping the valve from fully seating and sealing the vent hole. IF the chair is new, I recommend returning it to the place you bought it and REQUEST REPLACEMENT on the basis that the chair is DEFECTIVE. If it's not new, then it's a matter of either cleaning the valve, or if it's not blocked, then repairing it so it can seat [and seal] properly.

But to do a chair cover you will need a huge container in order to get the dye to saturate them and not have areas that remain white where there are wrinkles in the fabric. Most laundry mats in my area specifically have rules against using their machines to dye fabrics. But, there are a few dry cleaners in my area that will do it for you, but it is expensive. I had them dye a throw a while back and I remember it cost around $80.

Q: So I've had this office chair for about a year now. Recently, whenever i sit down it just sinks. But when i get back up, the chair immediately rises again. Can this be fixed or is it time for a new chair?: Many adjustable chairs have a thing which resembles a shock absorber in the support stem. You allow air IN or OUT to adjust the height with a manual valve. It sounds like the valve is defective and leaking, which allows the chair to sink as you say. There are NO user repairable parts, so it is time for a new one... You can TRY rapidly cycling the valve several times to see if it will seal again, but once a leaker, it is most likely always a leaker...

Q: im looking for a chair that is $100 or less and will have decent lumbar support, and is comfortable enough to sit in for a couple hours at a time. not your standard computer chair, more of an arm chair. possibly a futon chair, i dont know. open to suggestions: The goodwill.
