Q:I am a sophomore and the girl who is the first chair for the flute is graduating. My friend wants to be first chair and so do I. I am not sure if my band has ranking like that but I still want to get the first chair. Q:I am redoing a little iron vanity chair that at one time had a pillow back. I don't have the orig hardware for it and would like to know how to do this.: So are you asking how to reupholster the back of a small chair? Cut a piece of fabric at least 6 bigger on all sides, get a piece of batting 1/2 smaller all around than the area being covered and a staple or glue gun. Put the batting on the area to be covered, cover it in the fabric and pull the fabric to the back, securing with staples and or glue. Standard upholstery. Other wise, make a pillow the right size and shape and then tie it in place. I would add more detail to the question, maybe a pic of the chair?

Q:I am installing a chair rail in a room with a window. When my chair rail meets the window, should I run it right below the window trim? Or should I give it some room between the rail and the trim of the window. I am painting one color below the rail and another color above the rail.Thanks for your help!: Actually chair rail placement shouldn't strictly depend on window placement at all. To follow that line of thought; what might it look like if the window sill was as low as 12 inches off the floor level? OR above 48 inches. Certainly there are no chair rail laws or police to enforce a choice; and you should place it where it pleases you aesthetically. Without knowing at all whether or not the window is framed; or recessed into the wall as part of the drywall. I would NOT then frame the unframed window in chair rail. If the sill is at a height that suits the height of the rail, and does extend into the room; just BUTT the rail to the underside of the sill. Hopefully the window trim; if it exists; will be the same color as the chair rail. Without the details of the window this is all just guessing. Some homes have cultured marble sills; Especially those windows not framed with any decorative molding. The painting notion you suggest isn't unique. Steven Wolf

Q:I just recently had my floors changed from carpet to parquet (that wood-looking surface). It looks great but I don't want the chairs for my dining table to scratch it up. What can I put on the legs of the chair to keep it from making that scratchy noise and messing up the parquet (something that looks GOOD [no tennis balls please]): Several options from a full rubber tip to small felt pads on the bottom of the chair and table legs. Rubber boots are the best but they look gaudy.Felt pads come with a self stick side and you can get the in many sizes, so measure the leg bottoms before you go shopping . They are inexpensive so buy a few extra to have on hand. There are nylon tips you can apply buy these tend to scratch the floor. An area rug to fit under the table and 18 to 24 minimum bigger all around the table to allow chairs to go in and out, along with the proper anti slip mat under the rug. Q:Have you used one of those reclining booster feeding chairs rather then a regular high chair? Any recommendations? Do you wish you would have bought a regular high chair instead? Is it okay for my 4 month old?: My sister-in-law had one that reclined a bit and then it would sit upright as well. She loved it and still uses it to this day. Her son is 2 now. I think it would be great for a four month old because regardless what people think they do not sit exactly straight up at four months old and that is when doctors recommend trying to start baby foods. I do prefer a booster chair to the highchair because I got my daughter a high chair and she always prefers to sit in a booster. She likes to be at the table with everyone else. When she was that young though I used a bumbo. It is the suishy seat for babies that can't sit up very well on their own. It worked good too. It is a personal choice but I definitely am a advocate for the booster seat.

Q:Given a weight and the angle of the legs, how do I calculate how much force each leg of a chair supports?I'm kinda-sorta sure of how to do this problem in 2D, but I have no idea how to do it in 3D.: Assuming that each leg is identical and positioned at equal distances to each other, they should each support an equal fraction of the total weight, unless the weight isn't being put on the chair equally. e.g. if a four-legged chair, with legs peripendicular to the floor, has to support 100lb, each leg should support 25lb each. If the legs are at an angle, just use the leg as the hypotenuse of a right trangle, the 25lb as one side of the angle, and use trigonometry to find the force (length) of the hypotenuse.

Q:So, a friend and I are in the middle of a pointless debate. Which would cause more damage, being hit by a chair or a human? We are assuming a human mass of about 77Kg and a chair mass of about 5kg. Both being swung at the the same velocity (about 20 m/s). I said the human because it has about 17 times more mass and momentum.Please set the record straight.: I assume you mean the chair is being swung by a human and the human's arm is swinging, not that a whole human is being swung? So it is a case of being hit by a human with a chair or by the human's fist? The chair would be swung more or less at arms length. Assuming the arm is turning at about the same rotational speed for either the fist or the chair, the end of the chair would actually be much further from the body than the fist at the end of the arm, so the bit of the chair which makes impact would actually be traveling much faster than the fist. You can't simply compare the mass of the human with that of the chair because the mass of the chair is increased by the human who is attached to it and swinging it. Effectively the person and chair become a single bludgeoning unit unless the person lets go of the chair. Given that the total mass is similar but the chair will have greater impact because the bit of the chair farthest from the person swinging it will be moving at a greater speed, the chair will do more damage. Add in to the equation the fact that a person punching will be more likely to pull back from a full impact because of the pain involved in the fist when it hits its mark - but the chair feeds back no pain to the assailant so it can be followed through at full impact. Finally, if the chair hits at one of the padded parts then the blow will be significantly cushioned, but if it is a wooden bit that hits, that will be harder than flesh-covered bone.

They are probably just a little scared. Sit next to the chair and talk to them in a very quiet calm voice. Don't try to pull them out, or grab them in any way. It will probably just frighten them even more. Lay a couple of treats next to the chair where they can see them. They will smell the treats and might venture out to see what it is. Also, try dangling a string, or pulling a long feather across the floor infront of the chair. Most kittens can't resist such a temptation. Eventually they will come around. Don't worry. Q:I currently have a typical rocker/recliner in my living room, but I thought it'd be cooler to have something more unique. The only two other options that I could think of was a Papasan Chair or a Hanging Chair. Any other ideas?: Well you could just get a big nice comfy chair with an ottoman... But if you want something unique you could also go for a giant been bag chair. I have one. They are not filled with beans they'd re filled with foam so they are REALLY comfy. You can get huge ones that will fit your whole body. Here or some types.....
