Have the sales person plug it in before you buy a new one. Check several before you make your decision. I make the salesperson dismantle the brush roller, put on a new belt ,if it has one, you name it. I'm very sensitive to fighting a vacuum just to change a belt, or to clean the brushes! Q:I don't know much about vacuum cleaners. My vacuum cleaner isn't working now. I changed the filter, but it does not pick up the stuff on the carpet. I vacuum over it and it doesn't pick it. Step on release and let top rest on the floor, remove the hand wand, clean the tube the wand came out of carefully, with a hanger. The hose the wand is on can also clog too. I could give you more help if I knew what type of vacuum it is.

Anybody have any suggestions?: It's not you personally it is the brands you are purchasing, especially Hoover this brand is very cheaply made, try purchasing a different brand try maybe Panasonic upright, I have had this brand of vacuum for about ten years now and have had wonderful service out of it and it has been the most powerful easy light vacuum I have ever owned and longest lasting by far, and the best feature of all is it's maneuverability My mother has had Hoovers and she has had the worst luck with them too so you see it is not you and you are not jinxed Good Luck !

I use a dirt devil and also carry a small wet/dry vac,both are 3 years old.I have found the more expensive brands are not always the answer as mileage may vary. I have found there is an inherent cost of doing business,vacuums being a wearable tool.It does sound as if your on the way high end of costs.There is generally 2 reasons for premature failure.The first is of course bad/inappropriate product,the second being an operator issue.
