Most bagless vacuum cleaners have HEPA filters. You should be able to just go to your local target/wallmart/sears and pick one out. Another thing you can do to help is buy an air purifier for your roommate's bedroom. Most styles are basically a fan that pulls air through a HEPA filter. It would do a lot of good because allergy symptoms are usually worst in the morning right after someone wakes up since the person has been laying down sleeping which makes them prone to congestion.

Q:I'm a guy who isn't extremely familiar with vacuum cleaners so maybe someone can help. I was running around the house with my Kenmore Progressive vacuum cleaner and I accidentally pushed the adjustable thingy that lets you set the height of the vacuum. This adjuster thing is about halfway down the silver tube. The second I touched it, the carpet cleaning part shut off so it's just sucking air. I pushed everything together as hard as I could trying to get it to come back on but with no luck. I had been vacuuming for quite a while. Do these things shut off when they get too hot and stay off until they cool? It seems kind of fishy that it died right when i touched the adjuster thing though. Any ideas?

I interpret your description to mean that the motor that drives the beater brush stopped running. If that motor is really an electric motor (and not one of those turbine brush drives), and the problem of it shutting off when you hit the height adjustment is related, then it would seem reasonable to look for a broken wire. One other possibility is that maybe the brush dug into the carpet (did you adjust it downward?) and stalled the motor and that might have caused it to burn out (usually a fusible link in the motor windings), or with luck, it's just a breaker that you can reset. If it was a thermal protection device that tripped, it would had to have been quite a coincidence, because if it tripped from an over-temperature condition, it would not likey happen so instantantly after you hit the adjustment control.

I would just look for another Dirt Devil. Cheap and reliable.

If it is tossing trash out from the canister, there is a filter inside which is broken and needs to be replaced. There is no reason why a vacuum cleaner cannot last for decades.

We've replaced all the filters and cleaned it but it still hardly picks up a thing. It leaves little hair balls on our carpet and kicks dust back in the air. I have a Dyson and wouldn't recommend it. Lots of money for a cheap piece of plastic. The brush doesn't get into the carpet, just skims the surface. As far as suction goes, I have a kenmore that does a better job and contains the dust. The Dyson dust catcher is messy to empty and dust flies wherever you empty it. Also, the Dyson requires constant maintenance in removing pet hair attached to the brush and through the chambers. Hair and dust don't always make it to the chamber. If you have any problems with the Dyson, (mine broke after 6 months of use) you have to send it off and wait 4 - 6 weeks for it's return. My suggestion to you is buy a hepa filtered vacuum with or without bags. You'll save money and get a better built product.
