Q: My mom is looking for a new vacuum cleaner and can't decide between an upright or canister. She has a lot of carpeted areas and bare floor as well. What would you recommend? Can you suggest good vacuum cleaners that aren't too expensive and especially, aren't too heavy or difficult to maneuver?: I agree with Scorpio, a canister is more convenient for multiple floor types as well as dusting walls, window sills, stair banisters, books, etc. Actually I have both, I like the upright for just carpets; easy to maneuver and store. But when it's time for serious cleaning, out comes the canister.

Q: Money is very tight right now and my old, old, old vacuum cleaner truly bit the dust permanently. When I went to wal-mart to look at new vacuum cleaners I became rather confused and bewildered over the selection. I have been left behind with the 1970's style vacuums. Yes, I know - it's rather pathetic.Can anybody out there make a suggestion? I do not want to spend over $150-160. I have short pile wall to wall carpeting and linoleum.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.: I recommend trying to find a used Electrolux at a thrift store, yard sale, or pawn shop. This the old style Electrolux, not the new ones found in department and home improvement stores. They're much better than most new vacuums purchased today, and you may be able to get one for far less than your price. I've picked them up for around $20 before, and with some repairs, still comes up to less than $150. It should last for years. You can buy cheap new vacuums, but they generally don't last long, and the warranties usually aren't as good as they sound.

Q: i bought this new vacuum (dyson ball) one and felll in love with it :D am i the only guy out there who loves to vacuum? its powerful (sucked in my headset) it makes that loud motor noise, it sucks and u hear it go like gurrgurrgurrr and you can seee everything collecting through the little window :D its awesomee i love it!: lol..you sound like me, I get excited over new cleaning products. holy crap when they came out with the Mr. Clean sponge I thought I was in heaven. yes, life can be boring.

Q: Should I spend a lot and expect it to last for years, or should I spend a little and expect to replace it next year. What brand and model should I buy. Please help!: I prefer the canister cleaners. It's best all-around. You can use it for your car, too. You can't find them everywhere anymore. We have stairs in our house. Canisters are more flexible and they are not as heavy as the carpet vacuum cleaner (we have a Hoover also). We buy ours from Sears Roebuck. We pick the best one we can afford and the last one we replaced lasted us almost 20 yrs. of regular usage and then we gave it away to my husband's boss and bought a new one because I noticed that although it still worked, it had lost some suction strength. We also have a small shop vac. which I like because I needed it to pick up some rubble when work was done in our home and we also can use it to sweep our car and it's Very light. It's not a good carpet sweeper, though. No vibrating brush and we had to get an adapter to fit a smaller hose and extension tubes, plus the nozzle I didn't have already in order to sweep floor..

They made me feel guilty saying I spend more a month on my cell each month but afterall it's still $2000 for a vacuum: Came from generations of Kirby users hands down before commercial vacuum cleaners best on market but I dont buy new I go to pawn shops I can tell very quickly if in good shape and pick for less than 200 dollars for units 3 years old with all attachements. Now I have switched to commercial it has 40 pounds of suction is self propelled and has attachements built in bought used at vacuum cleaner store goes from floor to carpet as well now I have changed my mind commercial is built to handle the job go over floors just once!!! 53 years of vacuuming at your service lol

Q: I had never heard of Kirby until the other night when a couple of Kirby salesman came to my door asking if I wanted to have my carpets cleaned for free.: Don't buy one from the Kirby door-to-door salespeople. Their markup is 3-4 times what the real value of the machine is. Plus, they're very high-pressure and will try to shame/intimidate/push you into a sale. Don't even let them in the door unless your sales resistance is cast iron. Instead,go to any used vac store and you can find a used Kirby for a really good price. They ARE really superb machines, and do an excellent job cleaning the dirt from deep down in the bottom of your carpet. It has the best suction of any vac I've ever had. Pulling a carpet slightly up doesn't hurt it. I've had 11 vacs in the 30 years we've been married, and my 5 year old Kirby will be the last vac I'll own. Things I don't like about my Kirby; It is heavy, though it self-propels well. You have to do some complicated switching to use any of the attachments. The bags can only be purchased from Kirby, though I got some from an OKorder seller for a much lower price.
